I had a right battle with it, but I got it in the end.

What I had to do is click the "reset password" link on the sign up screen. That took me to their website where I confirmed I had the right email and a new password.

Then I shut everything down and started again.

Then i had to click "add key to existing account" on the login screen, copy and paste the key into the boxes, put in my confirmed email and password, and it worked.

A lot of people are struggling with it, and they need to make it clearer imho (even though they wont - games in maintenance mode now).

I just didn't have the patience to mess around with lol. I tried the password reset and confirmed I had a valid working account. It just kept telling me my email address was not recognised. (In game). Strangely it stated my unrecognised email was "" which it very clearly wasn't. Shame, I was really looking forward to playing this classic.

Would it not be worth just starting a new account with a throwaway email?

Yeah I might revisit, was just getting frustrated! :)

I'm getting the same issue... trying to link this new product to my Arena.net account I've used for Guild Wars 2. "Email is not found."

Is there anyway to get the serial key from the steam product so it can be entered on the Arena.net website?

Edit: I've found them (right click game --> manage --> cd keys), but neither the trilogy nor expansion are recognised on Arena.net.

Probably going to have to open a ticket to solve this.

If you can log into Anets site, you should be able to add the cd key using the "add key to existing account" option with the same login and password.

It sounds really obvious to people just reading it, but it's hard to explain why the game is so picky about it.

Just seems straight up broken.

I just had this issue with my gf's account, she played GW2 but this was the first time playing GW. (so of course she has an Anet account.)
we did exactly the steps that Psychlapse just mentioned and it worked perfectly, honestly it wasn't hard at all after following those instructions. If you end up picking it up follow those instructions and you'll be on in no time! :deathgrunty:

What helps me:
1. Launch GW1.

2. Go to the Create New Account pathway.

3. Enter the CD key (which can be found in Steam > Manage).

4. Enter a non-ArenaNet email address (I used my second email) and password.

5. All is fine; create the character and start playing. Exit game.

6. Open my GW2 ArenaNet account (non-stream) in the browser and link account from point 4 to my existing GW2 ArenaNet account (see Game Content).

7. Launch GW1 and sign up with my GW2 ArenaNet account and credentials.

PS. Redeeming a GW1 code in the ArenaNet account is not working.
because i have lost the pass word of my old account.... it is impossible to remove the old account with over 9000 hours and 23 years of game play.... nothing i do will allow me to build a account with this current email address.... i have lost 2 decades of play , a guild hall and any intrest in this game..... anet has made me hostile to all guild war products , .... because they have no customer support what so ever....... you play this game at your own peril .

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
