You dont need EotN to enjoy this game, but be ready for a somewhat challenging game until you learn the mechanics.
The game itself has a good story and is quite entertaining. The mechanics are both punishing and rewarding.
The lore of the “prophecies” campaign is epic, highly recommend if you like exploring games. Main missions are mostly optional in this campaign as well
the expansion itself is a mixed bag, it was supposed to be an "introduction" to the gw2 lore and it goes a bit fast, with lots of holes in the story; not to mention it is quite a grind to max the new "titles".
if you find the game too difficult (it was supposed to be challenging), then the "unlockables" in that expansion will help you a lot.
there are also "mercenaries" which will make the whole game a breeze to run through (kind of ruins the fun in my opinion)
Typically people start in one of the campaigns, then upon reaching lvl 10 and a port city they hop over to EotN to unlock the first 3 heroes in like 10 mins, then continue the campaign where they left off.
But if you start in Nightfall, you will start getting useful heroes pretty soon. The 3 core campaigns are largely unconnected (except for the penultimate mission of Nightfall that has references for the previous two campaigns). So you can play them almost in any order.
Btw mercenaries are indeed OP, but they cost a lot of real cash. (a 3-pack is 18 GBP)
I must point out that this is an opinion, and a bad take that hes in the minority with
I think it's worth a mention.
Whenever I'm playing an alt character, Legendary Master of the North and all the associated reputations are usually the titles I end up (inadvertently) filling out first.
And the array of new heroes that it throws at you really begins to open up your team-building possibilities. Especially consider if you ever want to use pre-packaged builds, any kind of a PvX or set of builds that someone will link you will Presume you have access to the fullest possible party comps (eg, three necros, or three mesmers, or two rits). If you don't you'll have to do a lot of inventing, and it's not impossible by any stretch, it's just kind of annoying to feel so "held back".
