Btw it's still sold on Steam, they just connected all the various store pages to a single community hub:
https://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=ArenaNet%C2%AE
you just need to bring the right skills to get past the rooms
Most people PLAY it for the solo challenge.
Guild wars 1 is very tactical, which is why most gw 1 players hate 2, for instance. You gotta have a plan and know what youre gonna do rather than just running in head first. Theres a ton of amazing guides these days
By the way i wasnt insinuating that you suck. I too remember being furstrated at first when i got back into it but itl click eventually
Which missions did you have trouble with?
as for the thread, you indeed need correct builds and gear for your heroes, it takes time to learn the AI and mechanics.
having spent more than 10k hours on this game, i can tell you that heroes are OP as hell.
i remember cleaning HM dungeons such as frostmaw in 50 minutes with a 6 hero party (me and 6 heroes, yes one less player for additional difficulty), a speed clear used to take 30 minutes if i recall correctly, and they used consets for improved speed and all
the skill gap between veterans and new players is large, most stuff you wont learn by reading guides.
I'm actually the furthest thing from rushing in; I try to have a balanced team (tanks, dmg, heals,), I always try to trim surrounding enemies before the main ones, I kite if I can, I try to kill their heals first. That's part of the reason why I was surprised by the difficulties I had on some missions.
Weapons and runes I did actually give them; I runed all their armor slots, and gave them at least purple weapons, some even gold and green. I was talking about the upgrades which you have at certain town where you collect armor parts to make new stuff for your heroes. Not sure how much they affect things.
I had 3-4 really difficult missions, mostly in Nightftall and Eye:
-The one with Shiro in Real of Torment; even by going through wiki, he was just dicing through my team in a few seconds (tried melee runes on heroes as well). In the end I had to cheese by trolling him near his agro boundary.
-The Varesh Ossa boss fight (where she resurrects); tried focusing her, tried focusing mobs, tried standing near the edge and then in center, nothing. In the end, I continued to Eye and returned after I picked up some dwarven skills from there and I think I managed (bugged?) toe exhaust her mobs somehow
-Some mission where you attacked a fort/camp and you had mobs coming down from the walls while you protected the battering ram. Again tried all the wiki advice, and I barely, BARELY, managed to save one ram only after respecing secondary monk all heals.
-The one with a giant worm where you had to manually carry explosives to damage him, my god that was hell. Trying to do that while trying to steer heroes away from his blasts, pure torture. and his regen was insane.
-Last Eye boss - fire runes on everyone + fire resistance skill on most + dwarven skill for extinguishing fire, and still I had to cheese my way through it.
Really dunno where my problems are, maybe I'm dont know how to play Para; I dont remember having any such problems with Proph and Factions, although those I played back when there were a lot of players.
It sounds like you're using melee heroes? That's generally a bad idea, try to focus on mesmers, necros and ritualists. (Monks if you don't have rits.)
I don't know if you're open to using a meta build or want to figure things out yourself, but this team[gwpvx.fandom.com] can tackle pretty much anything aside of elite areas. If you don't have the required heroes or skills, this guide[gwpvx.fandom.com] can help you get there.
With caster heroes I always just stick to the door, and lure her to me, so either none or very few of her adds attack my team.
Yeah, these ones can be annoying if you don't have mesmers to disable everyone and a Shelter+Unity ritualist to negate damage.
Yeah this was pretty annoying even with a meta team 😅 I barely managed to kill the boss before everyone burned to a crisp. But I don't think you should need to change runes for specific encounters, stick with the ones that fit your hero's build. If there are no good options, there's always Vitae or Attunement.
Even if you don't play your profession efficiently, your heroes should do most of the heavy lifting. So I'd try to fix that before worrying about your own build. With a strong hero team in normal mode you can mostly just stroll around and pick up loot, they can easily handle all the combat.
I cheesed Gyala Hatchery following the wiki's advice[wiki.guildwars.com], and did it backwards. It wasn't too bad that way, but you need to pull very carefully when there are a many groups in front of you.
