In any case, congratulations, you beat the tutorial. I would recommend paying attention to what is actially happening instead of skipping the cutscenes and wondering what happened.
For example, some NPCs were giving me abilities. I went to this ranger and confirmed I wanted to try their abilities. They give me a beginners bow that does more DPS than my crappy wand (it has +20% dmg but when you're doing 3-5dmg, that is laughably negligble, for example 20% of 3 is .6 so I'm doing 3.6dmg. But if an everyone has health pts. in WHOLE numbers then it doesn't matter unless they're rounding up. "I did 3.6dmg!" does the game round it up and call it a 4? or stay at 3. Who knows? who cares at this point). Anyways, I'm a Misamer...Mageisma or whatever you call that class AND I apparently I agreed to a "second profession". It should have been explained what this all meant. like, "YOU CAN TRY OUT THESE SKILLS" and "CLICK HERE TO MAKE PERMANENT".
After spending 3hrs in the game running around everywhere, I'm stuck with a useless pet, a HoT that takes almost as long to cast as to work, and that's about it. I can briefly DoT a target. In any case, this serves to drag out combat significantly (the last thing I wanted to do lol).
I started with GW2, decided to go play GW1. Got everything but the expansion.
Is this an actual game I'm playing? If feels like some kid's homemade RPG. Or a demo (ready on). Or a mod for NWN.
-There's a cheap 3D landscape.
-Generic NPCs.
-You have to run 5-10min. just to get to anything.
-combat is long and drawn out
-game is linear, can only stay on paths and fake-paths
-can't jump over small hills but forced to run in circle that takes 5-15min. to reach "goal"
-game makes you run back and forth. alot.
-invisible barriers everywhere. everywhere.
I don't even know where to go next. It doesn't say where. And this isn't free roam RPG either. I get to a quest marker. Talk to some guy. That's it. "Thanks for coming, here's some XP". At this stage: I can only go back to where I teleported in or go to this location right next to it which dead-ends at a balcony surrounded by an invisible barrier.
Did I reach the end of a game demo???
there are 3 confirmations before you choose a secondary profession for the first time...
Mesmer is also a playable class in GW2, you said you did play that one didin't you?...
you probably are now in "post Searing" Ascalon. if you bothered to watch the cutscene before getting there, you would know the place was hit by a large firestorm cast by the Charr Shamans while they had Vaatlaw lure you out and buy them time...
dont bother with this game, it is not for you, you wont get far by simply clicking random stuff
And the game is a total grind. All that "this is not a grindy game" is the biggest lie.
Everything costs way too much gold than what you can gain through quests of farming to get the mats to cash in/obtain for items. Every battle takes way too long, and you get attacked by hordes of creatures popping out of nowhere or aggroing from far away every 10 feet. Literally, took a minute to kill a spider-crab-scorp monster. Walked for about 10 seconds, then a pair of them attacks. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. I need a bolt of cloth just to get one item. But to get that, I have to buy a kit that costs 100gold. To get 100 gold I need items I can vendor. Drops are rare, even for junk, and what does drop only sells for 1 to 5 (if im lucky). The bag slots are so few I spent my first 100g just buying an extra bag which only added 5 slots. Lol.
It's like playing WoW and getting a quest in Goldshire to get 10 Kobold candles from the Fargodeep mine. But imagine each Kobold has 100HP and weapons not of your own class do way more dmg, so you have to use them. And at best, you do 4-6dmg per hit. And hit every 3 seconds. Attrition overload. *Now imagine just to get to the mine, you have to run for 5 minutes, but in the way, is a line of Kobolds spaced apart every 20 feet. Now imagine they drop 1 trash/junk item every 10 kills. Now imagine you simply can't go around them because the game has invisible walls that force you to take that path. Now..if you're imagining this sounds like a really crap game, then you're imagining Guild Wars.
you are a caster, caster are supposed to use spells... the whole game is based on skills rather than weapons alone, this is not a auto-attack game like GW2, nor a game you need to grind countless hours to get good gear
aside from the "rare skins", eberything is this game is pretty cheap, you dont need to grind anything if you dont want to, in fact the max dmg for a caster weapon is 11-22, and it costs 1k to make at a crafter, you can get that much by doing a single mission, every mission in the game gives you 1k gold as reward + 1k gold if you complete the bonus objective. you can reach max level halfway through the campaign if you care to do side quests
a full set of max armor will cost you 5k (1k a piece) + 5k in materials, you will get as much as 52k gold just from the main missions from the Prophecies campaign, add in the loot and quest rewards and you will get a fair ammount of money from just playing the game
the game is supposed to be played by a team, if you cant find human players, enter any city or outpost and add henchmen to fill the slots, some people like playing solo with a full team of them. the game gets pretty easy once you get the basics
i recommend you read the official wiki, it has comprehensive guides and hints for everything in the game:
https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
I'm guessing you're a Mesmer/Ranger? I'm the last person to dissuade people from experimenting with unconventional and potentially inefficient builds but at this early stage of the game I would focus purely on Mesmer skills rather than Ranger. A Mesmer shouldn't be casting Troll Unguent, except for in Pre-Searing where the skills are limited and there are no henchmen. Let your healer henchman handle healing and just help them out a little with your Ether Feast self-heal from time to time.
The primary quest chain shows you where to go. One of the quests will lead you to The Great Northern Wall, which is the first "mission" and you'll need to start that by clicking the button on the party window (add some henchmen to your party first though!)
Yeah, caster weapons are near useless for combat. The base damage is low and there are no attack skills for them. We generally only have them equipped for the bonuses they provide, which probably won't become apparent until later in the game. As meheezen says, it's all about your spells.
If battles are drawn out more so than what seems reasonable then you perhaps need a different approach. Enemy groups can sometimes include a healer, so go for the healer first. If there's two healers you might need a different strategy to just brute force killing them. As a Mesmer your Backfire and interrupt skills can help here. I can't remember exactly which skills are available to you early on a new account but I think Cry of Frustration is among them, which is a strong interrupt/damage skill.
Alesia (the healer henchman) can be annoying. If a melee enemy is attacking her she will often end up running around trying to get away from them leaving your party vulnerable because while she's doing that she's not healing. So a simple strategy is to pay attention to what is happening and protect her, kill or get in the way of her attacker, if she is attacked. This is less of a problem later in the game when parties are larger and you typically have two healer henchmen (or Heroes) in your party.
GW1 is alot more fun when playing with friends / even with randoms makes it more íntresting by searching and exploring things
1. The loot you thought the game cheated you is infact returned to your when you get into town. There is a small window that pops up with items you can claim. if you close this window without claiming the items then you lose them. The windows has maybe 12 slots which usually covers all the loots not picked up - unless you left too many on the ground. Bosses and chests dont drop that many.
2. The game has pretty scenary, and the structure is well designed. It is alot more realistic than you been able to jump up and down any kind of hill. The NPCs are also a lot better, their movements are not retarded compared to GW2 for a very very long time. I imagine it would have been fixed by now.
3. You basically demonstrated you are not reading anything, you dont know whats going on, you dont even know what a mesmer is called? really? have you played guild wars 2? You are playing quests that takes similar time in guild wars 2 and the outposts takes shorter time to get to. Guild Wars 1 is a very different game and a much better game in some respects. You obviously cant tell the difference even though you are stumbling all the way. Compalining about a beginner weapon when you just started playing the game is a joke. You dont understand the weapon, skill and armor system. This game is huge and very different. Learn to play. Guild wars 2 makes you run back and forth all the time.
4. To know where you go? Check the quest log, and the green marker on the minimap, and explore. How about pay attention to the tutorial when you start a character? You have no idea the structure and pace of the game. It is not grindy. Btw you are dealing no damage probably because you are playing solo. It is not a solo game, instances are suppose to be done in a group. Press 'P' button and click the henchman tab. You can add team members. Im sorry killing 1 monster doesnt get you from level 1 to level 2. This game has a well designed progression max out at level 20. Level 20 is not your goal, you are too used to grinding levels, gold and everything else. There are things you are not meant to buy straight away. Just progress into the game and you will be fine. Grinding for gears and everything else is the END game. It is not what you should be doing right now. What you should be doing is trying to have fun, playing the game, doing the quests for exp and skills. The skills quests are particularly valuable as they give you skills for free. You will have to pay for them later on.
Here's a tip, buy an identity kit when you have a chance, identify items before selling them, it nets you a higher price. You can also use salvage kits to salvage white items and monster trophies. They give you crafting materials you can save up to buy new armor.
Be patient, dont just jump up and down every time you run into trouble. If you run into trouble guild wars 1 community is very very nice. Just ask for help. People would even give you a few k gold to get you started so you dont have to grind or wait till you are at the later stage.
But you dont really need it, gear at the beginning of the game is almost completely useless. Dont bother grinding. If you are you are doing it wrong.
5. You seem to have a serious problem. All you seem to be doing is trash game for your own failings. Would you like me to trash your guild wars 2, cause I can and I will rip both you and the game to shreads and it will be my pleasure.

You make any game you have played look bad with the quality of players like you. Complete moron spouting idiotic complaints
The biggest things going for this game are:
-Build diversity, so many skills you can match together.
-Play with a hero party with builds you created.
-Enjoy your builds in PvP arenas or on many PvE maps.
Also the game runs better if you do not have it on Steam.
I remember it being one of my favorite games back in the day when it just got released, but playing it with today's expectation levels is just a no-go.
there is still no other game like this one, it is no wonder that i, being quite picky about games, got over 20k hours on this
