Noob question - gauging army strength?
i always wanna play this game again. but when i do i get annoyed that i attack a unit or an army without knowing how strong they are and then i get killed and lose interest. isnt there a way to tell whether you are ready to attack an army other than just doing it and reloading if you then see they are way to strong?

First you need to know how many enemies, what type and which tier you are facing
(hp, how fast, skills monster has).
Second, skills that will help you in battle or overland
(reduce damage taken, increase speed on map, higher tier spells and mass effect spells)
Third, magic to controll battle (for example reducing or increase speed)
Fourth, army (hp, how fast, skills monster has, placement on battlefield) shoters at begining is nice. Try to cover them with other unit so they will be able to continue shooting.
Fifth, stats will reduce damage taken and increase it, more spells casted and with greater damage
Sixth, Hero you pick to be main matter! Some are better than others. Hero with high spell tier (Solmyr or Deemer) very good skill (armorer Tazar or offense Crag Hack) or with quantity of starting monster (Valeska for Archers)
Seventh, building your City will help you faster clear your side of map. With good start
(a lot of gold and resources) build army, upgrade units that have good skill/talent (example: second attack)

Here, this is quantity (how many monsters you are going to face)
Few 1–4
Several 5–9
Pack 10–19
Lots 20–49
Horde 50–99
Throng 100–249
Swarm 250–499
Zounds 500–999
Legion ≥1000

With tier monster I recommend to memorize. Play as each faction to get to know them.

With skills, earth and wind magic, logistic, armorer, wisdom. Something that will give advantage in battle now or after few lvl. Leadership and luck is rng skill, skip it if there is no better to pick.

But to answer your question... you have to play game and experience it by yourself.
It is not shame to replay fight, you are learning game again.
