Hows online multiplayer?

I havent bought this game yet. Hows multiplayer? Does it work like modern multiplayer or you need find some port? Age of Empires 2 HD had multiplayer game list(only some lag is problem) but how about this game?

Tried this with a friend and worked.
We didnt open any ports.... this should be done automatically without you having to do anything in 2022...

friend invited me and i just clicked join on steam chat.
worked

but this version does not have simultanous turns so we refunded anyways....
having to wait each turn for the other person to finish everything is horrible....

GOG version has simultanous turns
and i also didnt have to open any ports there
