TSW or Classic
I just noticed Train Sim Classic on Steam. Does anyone have both? Are they different? Which one is better or are they the same?

Yes, different.

For me, I haven't really looked back since moving to TSW which I find slightly easier and open in the sense you can walk around inside trains and around stations.

But Classic will offer a lot more DLC, countries as well as longer routes.

TS Classic is an excellent game. I think the main differences are:

- A 24 hour timetable, with up to 1200 drivable servies per route.
- You have much more freedom to walk arount in your virtual world
- Far more details in all objects.
- Conductor mode, work as a conductor (not on all trains yet)
- Freeroam, you can add your own service th the 24 hour timetable

There is a public editor, which gives you essentially the same tools the devs have to create content, though it is very hard to do so, but not impossible.

I play TSC occasionally for content that is not available on TSW.

Many feel that TSC is more authentic with the looks of the train and the sounds, and some devs are better than others, like Armstrong powerhouse? And there is plenty of Free content being made here on Steam, but that also requires the DLC, here is one workshop item, https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2359843993 But At the same time it can get even more costly when you go down the 3rd party route. Some info for ya

TSC doesn't have the cool timetable mode and of course has worse graphics, but it has some really good non-DTG-made content (DTG had its moments too, but it's a mixed bag). Also if you want to drive steam engines, TSC is definitely better than TSW.

Yes I noticed TSW is DX10 and TSC is DX9 in the spec requirements. A good simulation however should not necessarily be centred around graphics.

You have all given me food for thought.

And most of those are just the same rides with a different time on the clock except you have a route with much freight...

The most important thing in a train simulator. And don't forget collecting hard hats and placing signs, there's no other train simulator where you can make these important activities.

I really like the new high detailed circuit breakers in the Traxx and Vectron locos. Oh wait, I can't open the door to the machine room to see them (and so I can't change the cabs like it's done in real)...

That's true. Zusi, Run 8, Maszyna, ZDsimulator...

The most basic difference is the selection of routes and rolling stock in TSC murders TSW.

You will also find a considerable assortment of non-DTG add-ons (routes/rolling stock/utilities) out there on the Internet, both freeware and payware.

Lastly on the selection of add-ons, you will find TSC and the third-party developers seem more willing to cover routes, etc, from many countries around the world that TSW does not.

Own both and love both bit TSC stays on my PC because of the broad selection of content compared to TSW.

And yet here is THE kicker: Both are DTG products, so how is it that TSC can have and do so much more than TSW when DTG develops both?

DTG did not create TS Classic. It was developed by Kuju [haven't loaded into it for a long time, but it should still say "Kuju" down the bottom on the initial Loading Screen].

We know that DTG did not create 'Rail Simulator', which was renamed to 'Railworks' by DTG and then changed name again to 'Train Simulator, Train Simulator 20xx and finally 'Train Simulator Classic. But both are owned by DTG.

It seems that GenX is talking about how that one of the reasons DTG wanted to create TSW is that they could not progress in a meaningful way with TSC and the original OLD game engine.

Yet we are into TSW 5 already and many of the well-respected features and strengths of TSC have not shown an appearance in TSW. And that is on top of DTG using the UE 4 engine to start from scratch.

That old excuse of being held back by the game engine in TSC is a bit weak considering they have 100% creative control in TSW.

I have decided that I must get Train Sim Classic especially after how you pointed out the superior scenario building qualities in our last exchange. Christmas is coming and it was suggested that Santa might have something waiting for me (I was hinting Waterloo to Portsmouth) if I am on the good list! We will see.

As per the Steam store, it shows DTG is the DEv and publisher of the Core game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/24010/Train_Simulator_Classic_2024/
I have seen many different Dev teams like Smokebox just to name one.
Okay, I see now that Kuju was the dev back when MSTS was released, but KuJu was still involved in some capacity, have a hard time getting good info, everything comes back to DTG https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Train_Simulator
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_Simulator_Classic
https://live.dovetailgames.com/live/train-simulator/history
I did get it running after an update and set it to windowed and now when I try to launch it, it just stays as an icon on the task bar. See what happens with a file verification.
