Does the monster "cheat"?
In my experience, 100% of the time that I'm running away from it, if I turn a corner and take several branching paths, the monster usually picks most/all the same ones I do. It only seems to give up after distance, but not because I've "lost" it. An example would be, if I turn a corner and there are stairs, the monster shouldn't know if I go up or down. Yet it seems to go the right direction every time.

Well the Monstrum is lured by sound, what I recommend while being chased is turn alot of corners, find a room and hide.

If you hear someone running in a staircase, you can determine if this person is above or below you. Why shouldn't the monster be able to hear that?

dude when you see a monster, walk away like nothing happened works for me

Perfect example: I started a new game, moved around just a little bit. Went into a little room, closed the door behind me. Found some notes and started reading them. So, I'm sitting there reading the notes for several minutes when I suddenly hear "thump thump thump" walking outside of the room. Ok. Sure, he's checking around the ship, looking for me. Except he doesn't go away. He just thumps back and forth near my room, where I am silent and unmoving. He has no reason to be in this area of the ship. I could be anywhere and he's decided that this is the place to loiter.

The monster cheats (at least the brute does), I don't know of any horror game in which the monster doesn't cheat. It knows where you are all the time, it is just programmed to pretend like it doesn't know.

I hid in a locker for about 30 minutes while I went and made myself lunch, and I watched as the monster repeatedly entered the room, stood there for 30 seconds, then walked out every 2 minutes. (I never touched the keyboard or mouse during this time) occasionally he would stay in the room for longer than 30 seconds (maybe 3 minutes).

It looks like he his programmed to stay on the same level as you.

The hunter's AI will generate spawn points around the player's location. The hunter, while despawned, is actually located in all of these spawn points at the same time, and he will be triggered when the player walks by a spawn point. This can lead to situations in which the player finds spawn points appearing in front and behind him, and then is unable to continue without triggering the hunter.

I was thinking the brute had more of a homing beacon that gave him a kind of general area of where you are, but when he’s chasing you he’s got a direct line to follow and can only stop following that line once a certain amount of distance is created, and then he returns to homing beacon mode.

yes it does cheat i was heading toward the living quarters and the crawler teleported right in front of me what a load of bs and the last i saw it was in the cargo hold so yes it does cheat.

The hunter cheats, too. He's usually just hiding though.

he cheats all the time. i used the egg timer and and he never showed up to my dinner party :( but no, seriously, he always knows where i'm at no matter how quiet i am. i also think he uses the cargo containers in the lower deck of the ship to get to the other side quicker. [/spoiler]

Yeah - I completely agree with "scofthe7seas's" comment about the monsters not leaving the small area the player happens to be in. It's really frustrating and unfair because you end up just going into the same few rooms over and over trying to hide and avoid the creature instead of making any progress. It then just comes busting back into the room after a minute or two anyways - even after not making a sound. What am I being punished for at that point?

Well, the problem is that it makes the hiding mechanic completely pointless. What's the point of going under beds, in lockers, or in little rooms if he's just decided he's found you, and is now going to hang out exactly where you are forever? It just encourages you to have to run constantly. Forget about the whole hiding aspect :/
So i know its scary and all guys, but the answer is hide, wait till he checks on the room your in, then you must quickly sneak out before he returns. Its scary and hard but i think thats the solution. you have a 30sec to 2 min window before he checks on you again, that should be plenty of time to sneak out.

Sooooo.... I was playing on a friends account, I got chased by the big guy..... I ended up getting into a locker in a small room ( I think near the spawn deck, cant remember) and the big guy started checking my room periodically. Now, I've played Alien: Isolation recently and I had gotten used to the ol' "monster idling nearby, gotta go fast" stealthing. I waited till about 10 seconds after he had left my room and I could no longer hear footsteps.... got out of my locker thinking I had a minute window to get away from this dude. I go to leave and the moment I walk out the door I see him out of the corner of my eye... HE WAS IDLING BY THE WALL RIGHT NEXT TO WHERE I HAD BEEN HIDING. By the time I realized what was happening, he had me and it was GG. I love this game, but jesus the monsters are basically omniscient trolls. Its horrifying, and yet I want to play more.

But anyway, TLDR; stealth is hard mayng.

well thats ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

can't there just be a wander mode that gives the player a bit of time to actually make some progress?

This seem to be the base point of alot of complaints recently (5 if i counted correctly) . People seem to think the AI's other than the Hunter are far to unforgiveing and i can 100% agree.

The brute not so much the fiend should not have this inate ability to harass the player with the frequence they do.

hopefully Junkfish fix the AI making the game less annoying and frustrating.
