Objectively speaking, some games employ that model because of modern player trends and expectations (Others do because the devs want all players to be able to experience all the content, regardless of the choices they make).
As with everything, we actively attempt to strike a good balance between settings that we hold dear in Traditional RPGs, and what today's players want from the genre.
With a little patience and willingness to learn, anyone can overcome Old-School Veteran ;)
