For now I recommend to not swap after summons. Move to empty slots if possible instead.
Edit:
Guess you are talking about this, right?

How do I choose exactly who I want to swap, and where I want to put them?
You cannot choose who you want to swap. You can only choose who the currently active character will swap with.
When you are clicking on someone in the back row you are actually telling the whoever's combat turn it is, to swap with that person in the back row.
To setup the default positioning that they start in at the beginning of combat you have to use the combat formation button when you are out of combat.
Where is the combat formation button, please?
But, the lack of a comprehensive manual, heck any manual at all, is very annoying. I sure hope the developers have this on the top of their priority list.
There are a LOT of newbies coming into this game having never played the early access, and we don't know anything about it. Come on developers, give us a manual please!!
There is a manual, it's called the Deluxe Edition!
Instead of just closing those windows, read them.
I read all the hint windows. At least I thought I did. I started over and saw it this time. Thank you.
But as Qiox said: Most essential stuff is actually explained in pop-up hints or can be read in tooltips.
Maybe it's also a matter of personal experience and how you approach a game (e.g. first thing I always do for example is to check out every interface option I have), but I also never felt that I didn't get all information needed. With the exception of: Calculations (and without understanding them there is no point in the combat log) and future skills of classes. There could have been more information about this in the game.
