Party Composition
I'm rolling with a barbarian, soldier, cleric, mage, thief, and explorer. For the beta vets--am I better off dropping the soldier for a bard or paladin? I like having two pure melee types up front, but any advice is welcome. Especially since I don't know how the barbarian develops mid/late game. Thanks in advance.

Bards have very good synergy with melee classes, very mana hungry though. The paladin is a defensive soldier/priest hybrid who can help out if your party feels to squishy.

From personal oppinion, bards add a lot of utility so you should consider taking one along. Barbarian was once superior to the soldier but the soldier received major buffs in one of the latest patches so I can´t comment which of them is better now.

Thank you! Is the Bard a decent replacement for the Thief--can he/she open locks, disable traps, etc?

I don´t think the bard had this kind of skills, or they were way to expensive to improve. He has the detection skill, though. However, the explorer (main hero) can pick locks and disarm traps. It is a bit more expensive to improve them with the explorer, so you have to keep in mind that you will need more skill points to develop this skills with your explorer.

In fact, I started a party without thief on hardcore difficulty. It is doable, but especially lockpicking is not easy (you also have the option to just crack the lock with force). And your explorer will be weaker because the skill points are no longer available for other stuff.

To sum it up, I recommend taking the thief if you are still new to this game.

2 Soldiers, 2 Paladins, and a Mage.

Come at me bro.

I think that could work, but you will miss the bard, especially his accuracy song. I would also like to know if 2 paladins can handle the healing. In my mind, the cleric seems just too good to pass on.

I'm not sure. I ALMOST picked the cleric. But Paladins have always been my favorite class in RPGs, so I picked two of em. (Heck I would have picked 4..... but the soldier seems to be really good). Biggest problem is the lack of PP. So at the 1st level up make sure to boost that.

Thanks, guys. I got a little farther in (lvl 4) and can see that I definitely need the thief. Way too expensive to level lock picking and trap detecting with the explorer...

Going with an explorer (MC), soldier, arcane soldier, paladin, mage and thief.
And having a hard time :-D (lvl3)

Tip: If you have a Paladin, ALWAYS put them in the center row. Their aura only heals adjacent heroes.

Thanks, Grumlen.

17 hours in and so far I'm a bit disappointed with the Paladin. Abilities seem too weak / expensive to upgrade, have been using it more like a nerfed Soldier. Best use I've found so far is using the heal aura to make up for terrain damage.

Rest of party is Mage, Cleric, Soldier and Thief. Pretty happy with all of those. Still not sure of which way to go with the Explorer.

I have a back row paladin that is working out ok so far. basically is a aoe healer cleric. I building speed and energy mostly for buffs and healing. he is back row and hardly attacks at all except when i need a quick stun.

I have Barb/Pal/Sold in front row. If you only up the Pal's Blessing spell, then he also makes a pretty decent fighter. Adding +10 (at the time) to everyones Evasive and Defence is a great buff.

I use my Explorer as my theif, but it is VERY expensive, and he's barely able to help the group during battles. So I'd suggest making him in charge of scrolls, saulves, and "Help An Ally", and he becomes more useful. But outsid of battle, he's invaluable.

prolly best setup is

Gaulen left front (only being a tank no combat skills)
paladin middle front)
arcane soldier or a barbarian front row right
let back row a cleric
other 2 spots filled up with mages;)

and GIMP gaulen tottaly useless in combat ^^ give him alot of CON/agility or speed ^^

seems soldier just way to good due to cheep all around abilities also bleedign strike is good + he can get it super fast. thief are nice fast attack hits ofter even with swords cheapo skills allowin gauren to focus on dmg and herbalism etc, mage speaks fopr self now with divine summoner i am debating doign summoner+ pally or maybe cleric+ bard, not a huge fan of bards overall + moist bard scrolls arenty hard to come by. anyhow anysuggestionsd on last 2 members
