Your problem is the 'killing the monster one tile away' bit. You have to let the monster actually hit the orb but have a shot on its way from the tower when it does. The shot will 'blink' ie. teleport to the monster as it is banished and if it kills it then you don't lose the mana.
1. Max fusion skill, blow all the rest skill point into something junk (curse, detonate, etc)
2. Go to F1 (because it is just 3 waves), with 1 mana lock trait
3. Build tower + amp around it with just crit +bb gems near orb.
4. Use the rest of mana on building amp all over map.
5. Start waves, slowly kill all but 1 left, shrink your tower range to 5% or 10% don't kill last one yet.
6. Let last monster walk up near orb.. make use of "1 step" pausing.
7. Once monster is standing on top of gold ring of your orb, turn up your tower gem to max range.
8. spend all your mana again on creating gem, upgrading, do again and again until you have almost no mana left (should be less than 7 mana)
9. unpause game
So I think you are not close enough.
When a shot is fired intended for a monster, and that same monster hits your orb, the shot turns into a lightning blast, causing instant damage.
So to make it easier, use a strong gem really far away. Lower it's range so it won't kill it before you are ready. Wait until the monster is nearing the orb, and then extend the range again.
As long as the shot is in flight when the monster hits the orb, it will blink.
gem fire is flying to monster
flying time is term to hit
if you have 1 hit kill gem and fire and flying time and monster banishing and low mana
Profit

Sorry that i necro this post, but i have to confirm this as the best possible way. Just did that, with a yellow-white gem in a tower, next to orb, blinked all but 1 to death, let 1 run till it costs like 25k to banish, which would have elseway killed me, turned up the range to blinking range, and boom! Mana Lock lvl 1 was a great help too.
Took me like 4 or 5 attempts until i got it.
Didnt even change any of my Skills.
Thanks dude! That was the guide that did it for me, with just a few small tweaks - I had moved the tower to be adjacent to the orb and used the 2nd level crit gem.
1) Reset your skills and only buy Critical Hit, Fusion, Resonance, and Amplifiers.
2) Go to field W1 Journey and set Swarmling domination to 12.
3) Using traps, kill everything except one swarmling. If necessary use Freeze to isolate him.
4) Remove your trap gem and let the swarmling banish over and over until he has a sufficiently high banishment cost that it will overcome your mana generation for a few seconds.
5) When you're ready, pause with the swarmling to the south of the orb.
6) Put your kill gem in a tower to the north of the orb. You want it far enough north that its range stretches just a bit south of the orb. Put beam on the gem so that it's off cooldown.
7) Buy gems an towers to use up as much of your mana as possible.
8) Hit go. As soon as the swarmling gets in range of your tower it will fire, but your gem is far enough away that the shot won't reach the monster in time. It will blink to the target and you get the achievement.
The achievement is also bugged and checks that you have less mana than the monster's banishment cost after you've killed it so you can have a monster die to a blinking orb shot which would destroy your orb but not get the achievement since killing it put your mana above its banishment cost.
