How to have all gems available
Hi,

I am lvl 158 playing the story mode.

At this point each map only has certain gems available to use.

When I see youtube videos lots of them have ALL 9 gems available. At what point in the story does this happen ?

Thanks

There are several tomes on some fields. That are the round things with tasks to open - i.e. on E4. When you open them, you get skills, some of these skills are color-specific. Once you opened such a tome, you have the gem on all fields of the map.

Are the color-specific tomes specific to a certain field, or are they random. If they are specific to a field, is there a guide to which field will unlock which gem?

Here is a list of fields that unlocks gem types:

Orange: B5
Yellow: R1
White: L6
Red: U8
Green: E4
Cyan: Q5
Black: W5
Blue: K6
Purple: A3

You, sir, are an awesome individual :)

Thanks much!

You must also remember to put at least one stat point in each tome level- that is the way you get the gem. I think red is the one you get last..

Nope, you can have it 0 point in and still can use the gem.

Tbf, it may be a good idea on looming to get access to all the gems, admitdly it made life a bit difficult on a few levels, but once you get crit, mana, chain and poolbound, you will simply sky rocket, since poolbound will, once leveled, will siginificantly boost the power of any gem (make sure to also invest in traps, mana stream and true colours, these will senergise very well), that siad, don't pour all your skill points into them, since ya kinda need the starting mana to let ya deploy the high grade gems.

It does make me wish, how ever, that there was a key bind to let ya gem bomb the next 5 waves, or at least let you do multiple gem bombing on a single wave tile (e.g do a auto 5 gem bomb on a wave), cos its admitdly grinding having to keep pausing to then gem bomb the next waves (though that also does kinda cause the game to lag when ya got 1k+ monsters steam rolling at you).

You can multi-bomb waves. Put your cursor on the Gem bomb button, then use your mousewheel/up-down keys to adjust amount and use B-Shift shortcut. If you set it to say, 5, you will be bombing waves with 5 bombs at each click.

Is "Chapter 2" the other name for "Chasing Shadows"?

Yes: The distracting order of the four games is:

2008: GemCraft chapter 1: The Forgotten
2009: GemCraft chapter 0: Gem of Eternity
2011: GemCraft lost chapter: Labyrinth
2014: GemCraft chapter 2: Chasing Shadows

The gems I've unlocked are still only available on the maps that show them, so I am genuinely unsure what is meant by "unlock" since nothing in gameplay is changed.

If you pay attention, you will see that the gems you have unlocked are shown on all maps now, rather than just on some of them. Next time you unlock a color, check the older fields again and you will see that color has been added to the list.
TheVoluntaryist Dec 20, 2015 @ 4:52pm
Yeah. They're not there. That's what I'm saying. I've unlocked half of them, and the fields are the same. They still show only the gems they did before, and I can still use only the gems they originally had.

If you have a particular color/gem in your skill screen, it should be available on all regular fields. Note that the "vision" fields will still only have the gems specific to that vision field; they are special challenges and you will never get all gem types for the vision fields.
