I don't really know past that. I'd say crit gem is really important for outputting damage.
Make 4 color gems maybe with armor tearing, crit, poison, and slow.
Maybe make one that has chain hit and allow it to focus on the swarms.
This one is really tough, I must admit.
As an unrelated note, I'm planning to write a Vision Field walkthrough this time. Probably at this weekend or next week.
EDIT: A G5 purple is OK but the Guardians can get closer. Just don't forget to upgrade that G5 purple. Also you may want to have a G7 use "least hit points" at W24 swarmlings. When fighting the last 2 waves using the G8, use "nearest to orb" but keep an eye if a larger group rushes by. Select one of the monster farther away from the orb in that group when they start to leave the gem's range to ensure you can kill at least one or two more instead of wasting your shots firing at the 1st monster when they start to leave your gem's range. Yeah, priorities matter.
EDIT2: Did more testing. 3r1y (later 7r1y) seems better than 3y1r here.
EDIT : Ok! I got it. Finally. Just barely but i got it. (The gardien was one square away form my orb.)
My biggest problem, is i was using R + yellow istend of pure red AND trying to use 3 gems istend of 2. (I keep telling myself i need 3 to not get overun...WORNG!)
I tried a pure red and one purple gem, it worked after a few tries, with the mana i get form killing those gardiens,i managed to get a pure yellow to finish off the gardiens fast eneuf to save my orb.
Well, that's that. Thanks for helping you all!
For the guardians, I used a g6 purple and a g4/g5 slowing gem. I had a g7 and a g6 killgem. after all armor of all guardians was gone, I sold the purple and was able to get a g8 killgem.
[edit] here is the link of my video, i hope it will help ;)

I mean ofc the entire game is about math ^^ but you have a certain part of freedom in building except if you play for the "Hmmm I only play for the perfect run dude". So I guess you'd better run a sub program that would optimize all the moves and when you set/ up / how / where etc...
Don't try to be a ♥♥♥♥ you' could succeed...
V fields are no much fun as it's more "puzzle" run as you have to fail - retry n E-x just to find the proper build order and sequence to pass.
Ofc it's my opinion and should reflect only my thought.
Gemcraft has FUN (and lot of) except in those V fields as I don't feel like guinea pig having to find the proper gate for his meal.
I did want to throw in a comment about the guardians - don't bother trying to deal damage until the armor is reduced to zero. Prioritize as many Purples and towers as you can afford as soon as they appear, and move the gems to make sure they never stop getting hit with armor-reduction. By the time they reach the last choke point of the map (where all lanes merge into one), their armor will be 0 and your G7-8s will tear them down LONG before your orb is in any real danger.

Now in the video from Daikha I see I could have placed some towers closer to the crawling guardians to hit them more often :x
