On my last attempt, I tried an alternative strategy without amps. Still start with a g4 3y1r on the same position as indicated in the guide. I used no poison (but still a slowing trap) and no mana leech gems, instead I concentrated on opening the shard - after getting to g5, place a tower to the shard, this time again with a 3y1r gem. upgrade it, when it reaches the same grade like your killgem, combine them and rebuild a new shard gem. Redo and win.

However, I'm pretty sure I tried this "new" strategy when we wrote the guide and I'm also sure there was a reason why I preferred the one in the guide.
