Kingdom Rush is okay for me. Completed the first one and that's about it.
You'd probably be interested in Element TD. The versions I know are mods in Warcraft 3 and DotA 2, as well as one in Android (not sure for iOS)
I probably have played plenty of good TDs but i pretty much forgot.
Besieged (not to be confused with the Besiege game on Steam)
The Protector series
Honorable mentions: Cursed Treasure, Onslaught2
but apart from GC series I did enjoy playing Bloons TD series and Kingdom Rush series as well.
Honorable mention: Cursed Treasure series
2) Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows
3) Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten
Dungeon Warfare is worth a mention. Plain, simple, cheap, and very customisable and flexible.
Bloons Tower Defence 5 is another genuinely good game, with lots of room for using strategies that work for you. The only trouble is that it has several difficulties, and beating it on higher ones doesn't complete the lower ones. It means you have to beat each stage several times, with the challenge never getting harder. This ticks me off a bit due to wasting time so I've stopped playing, but it may not be an issue for everyone.
I'd also mention Orcs Must Die 1 and 2. They're not true Tower Defence games in my opinion, but they certainly are fun. I can't think of any other game that I've played that scratches quite the same itch that OMD does.
Yes, dota 2 supports custom maps, found in the Arcade tab. Lots of community maps there :)
Didnt know about SC2. That's interesting.
You also reminded me of Mineralz. It's a very good survival builder mod :)
Hero defense (not sure how perfectly it is considered a tower defense game, but it has all the elements)
And for a honorable mention, (really, purely honorable, not quality) Wyzau Circle TD
2. Defender's Quest
3. Kingdom Rush
Defenders Quest for the surprisingly great writing.
Creeper World 3... not fully sure why. It is simple, but fun, and would take you a year to 100%
