Xbox one controller doesn't work with mount your friends? anyone run into this issue?

Was just playing with one a few minutes ago. I run it plugged in through USB if that makes any difference. If you're going wireless, maybe try to make sure it's on and ready when the game starts or maybe try unplugging and replugging after launching?
