sadly there is no multiplayer for the main story missions, but you can play Joint operations with friends when you unlock it... its an ok mode, but definitely a disappointement compared to playing the original Metal Slug games with friends.

just keep playing through the main story. You should see cut scene and there a helicopter that fly you to town. In town you will see Joint operations.
The other method of multi player coop and join a club (guild). Clubs have club events going on that's about beating up a boss in a team of 3 players.
