Vlad the Impaler

Vlad the Impaler

Ez a téma zárolásra került
Vlad is actually a Romanian National Hero
He had a small land that was surrounded by a much stronger turkish force, his people and himself had suffered at the hands of these people. He was actually in bondage as a child to the turks. The turks were nortorious for operating a barbaric slave trade.

He devised a plan where he would protect his Nation from invasion by doing small raids and mounting the corpses as a sign to other attempts.

This is a very breif summary, but he was actually a great man who protected his people in an extremely dire situation.

I dont know if it has been mentioned before but a lot of the tales that demonize Vlad were manufactured specifically for that purpose by his enemies as well as his rivals (esp Matthias Corvnus). The literary diarrhea on display here by imbeciles like Smeggy is based entirely on fiction inpsired by such propaganda. The stupidity of people never fails to astound me.

I am as far away from Romania as one could possibly be, yet I know Vlad to be a tragic hero and a military mastermind. Even a cursory study of the history of that time will lead anyone with a brain to the same conclusion.

I find it hilarious that OP states the Turks were "evil" just because they took slaves from the conquered country. Romanians probably forgot (it's been a long time since they conquered anything) but until 20th century it was a common practice to take slaves in most wars and before the industrial era it was the primary source of the workforce in mines, etc.

And it's still common practice today to call your country's enemies "evil". Hell, many people in the US still think the CSA was "evil".

Yes. While completely ignoring the fact of how many progressive country leaders they had assasinated just because these countries wanted to be independent from the US.

There is no good or evil, just perception.

History has a lot of grey area, especially when considering history is quite often another's telling of it, meaning there is bias and agenda right at the source.
This is because the end always justifies the means... always. Well, historically speaking anyway. If you look at the actions of mankind, it definitely shows that.
Where the "gray" areas come in are the moral cultural views of later people looking back. They project their own moral filters on the actions of others without having experienced what those they are judging experienced.

He isn't just a Romanian hero. There are many of us all around the world who admire him for his convictions.

Even during his lifetime, Vlad III Țepeș became famous as a tyrant taking sadistic pleasure in torturing and killing.[citation needed] He is shown in crypto-portraits made during his lifetime in the role of cruel rulers or executioners. After Vlad's death, his cruel deeds were reported with macabre gusto in popular pamphlets in Germany, reprinted from the 1480s until the 1560s, and to a lesser extent in Tsarist Russia. As an example of how Vlad Țepeș soon became iconic for all horrors unimaginable, a typical German pamphlet from 1521 gives numerous examples of lurid incidents, such as the following:[13]

He roasted children, whom he fed to their mothers. And (he) cut off the breasts of women, and forced their husbands to eat them. After that, he had them all impaled.[13]

Vlad Ţepeş's reputation was considerably darker in Western Europe than in Eastern Europe and Romania. In the West, Vlad III Ţepeş has been characterized as a tyrant who took sadistic pleasure in torturing and killing his enemies. Estimates of the number of his victims range from 40,000 to 100,000.[14] According to the German stories the number of victims he had killed was at least 80,000. In addition to the 80,000 victims mentioned he also had whole villages and fortresses destroyed and burned to the ground.

Impalement was Vlad's preferred method of torture and execution. Several woodcuts from German pamphlets of the late 15th and early 16th centuries show Vlad feasting in a forest of stakes and their grisly burdens outside Brașov, while a nearby executioner cuts apart other victims. It was reported that an invading Ottoman army turned back in fright when it encountered thousands of rotting corpses on the banks of the Danube.[citation needed] It has also been said that in 1462 Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople, a man noted for his own psychological warfare tactics and the impalement of subjugated peoples in the Ottoman Empire, returned to Constantinople after being sickened by the sight of 20,000 impaled corpses outside Vlad's capital of Târgoviște.[17]

If he's a hero in your country; i'm sorry but your country has issues
You don't learn history from Wikipedia. He wasn't that cruel, and what he did was pretty normal back then.

Wikipedia is not a credible source, especially when the articles in question have multiple uncited statements mixed in with dubiously cited ones.
All that is based on medieval German horror stories with zero historical basis. Use your brains for goodness' sake. Do you really think Romanians will forgive the sadistic murders of 40,000 of their own people to make Vlad a national hero? Or do you believe Vlad transformed himself into a bat and flew to Germany on a regular basis to commit said horros there?

this thread always becomes active then inactive then active agian just to haunt me. And yet, I still don't know if Vlad was a monster or not.
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but there is a new Dracula film (Dracula Untold) coming out in October. Now, I've only watched this -Trailer-[www.imdb.com] but it looks as though their portraying him as a solid anti-hero with credible reasons for the monstrous things that he does.

I really like Vlad as a fantasy character, you can do a lot with him and even without introducing vampirism there's still enough character there to create a credible and functional story.
During Vlad Tepes, Vlad The Impaler's time, did you know fountains had golden goblets/chalices ?:) You didn't ,did you?
He had no bloody habbits other than sticking THIEVES AND ENEMIES (mostly turks enemies lol) into stakes/spears/pikes etc....
The Dracula nickname came from stupid peasants who saw the medallion he EARNED (not inherited from his father but earned, his father was also in the => ) from a chinese Order of the Dragon ( which had members from all around the world) and when peasants saw it they said it was Dracul ( "the devil" )
All you spice girls can just google Iancu Corvinus of Hunedoara(Iancu Corvin de Hunedoara), Michael the Brave ( Mihai Cel Viteaz ) , Mircea the Old ( Mircea cel Batran ) , Stephan the Great ( Stefan cel Mare ).
You can also google Valahia and see where Valhalla and all the norse mythology and nordic countries descend from :) and google others too like Decebal & Deceneu , the legend of the black knight Negru Voda Thocomerius ( and in general, the Black Knights in various countries's legends ) ,etc.
PS : here are 3 pioneers in the aerodynamics domain only :) - Aurel Vlaicu ( not just Gyrocopter hero in DotA 1/2 haha xD ) , Henri Coanda, Traian Vuia. And there are many more other epic pioneers & inventors, contemporary with us too,not just old ones in history.
And just google about the geto-dacii ,the getae-dacians :) . In the first war with the romans and they had to adjust their helmets and added the sliding things surrounding the head so their necks wouldnt be cut by - google the Dacian Falx (flax in our language xD even the one-handed version might seem as two-handed weapon to us nowadays lol) also in second war they had to send more legions than the roman laws permitted lol and they only conquered like 10 percent or so of Dacia :) and even after there are some writings that managed to pass trough time's manipulation (some people more likely ) where some historians (romans and not only) admit they were attacked by the free getae-dacians from various cardinal points (north, west, south, east).
Long time ago in history our ancestors used to recieve tribute payment from romans & ottoman empire, not the other way arround xD ....
Anyway i believe topics like these should be closed, because some people are ignorant to no end ,some think Romania is near Pensylvania, others think its Rome,etc... Also there's bound to see some hungarians trying to steal our country, almost all of them want to xD ..point is, Politics,Religions and Aliens are long subjects to be debated and can lead to flaming etc so let's stop the topic shall we?I will just conclude with the fact that many want to modify and even erase our history and steal our country for it's various resources and not only xD.But they will only try without succeeding :)

Edit: PS: Carolus Lundius from Sweden in XVII century told the king he must take in consideration Zamolxis's laws because that's where they descend from. ( Zamolxis the main god of the Getae-Dacians ,also where norse mythology comes from xD proof would be Valahia-Valhalla and not only. )

Farsight, you should also watch the anime Hellsing and Hellsing OVA :D with AlucarD ( read it reverse = Dracula) , yeah the movie Dracula 2014 will be quite nice i think Luke Evans will be great in the role .
Also some people made these sayings and not for nothing - "anything goes in love and war" , "lex talionis" , " sic vis pacem para bellum" ( if you want peace, prepare to go to war/prepare for war) :) And as i said,in reality his enemies were thieves and ...enemies xD mostly turks, ottoman empire. And our leaders did great against them ^_^ search my post about their names , Iancu,Mircea,Mihai,Stefan . and Vlad Tepes ofc.
It's true in history throught the world many leaders and not only, did some things more or less ..in the gray zone ,since they had no previous history to show mankind what to do/what happened with those encounters/those circumstances,so ,people on this topic,do not judge :) there's only so much a human's imagination can do when not trained by intelligence (knowledge, information i mean in this particular case ) and wisdom (to use it ofc)

PS: howdy Razvan scammer, how's the Fable the lost chapters & Skyrim legendary edition working out for you?You know i have an uncle that works at IBM :) you gave me more than enough details ^_^ . And we'll talk about that in another place and time ;)
