Unclear how to save game

When I return to main menu I get a warning that the game has not been saved. Can someone please explain how to save the game?

I had the same interrogation, and found no answer (but stumbled on this old thread), so I gave it a try. It's already clear that within a level, there are checkpoints which save your progress - but it's indeed unclear whether this checkpoint progress within a level is also kept when you leave the game and then choose continue.

Since I've tested, I can confirm that those checkpoints effectively save the complete game progress. The phrase telling you that you will lose all progress since you last saved is needlessly alarming, since the player does not save herself, but only via checkpoints. I guess the devs could change the sentence to something less alarming, like "The progress since the last checkpoint will be lost."
