Control Problems PC

I just started playing and am at the first rope. The instruction says '(Fox) Lower Rope' but the control I need to use is obscured. It looks like 'Space' but I can't get the rope to lower.

I have tried resetting the game from the last check point, exiting and starting again, and restarting my laptop. Nothing has helped. I've also watched a few videos and know what's supposed to be happening but I can't get it to happen.

You can check ingame options for keyboard/controller mapping.

Space is jumping.
Since I played the girl and not the fox I assume shift is for lowering the rope.
