Protective mode help

Trying to figure out the best way to block out the tags that I don't like. The Trigger Mode version says that it makes it so that banned tags will not be assigned tasks, but I was assigned one anyway. We were going to just ignore it, but the tags my friends and I didn't want kept showing up every other fic idea, so I tried protective mode, but it censors literally everything. I can't figure out how to 'whitelist' tags, only blacklist them, but blacklisting doesn't seem to affect anything. Clicking through asterisks isn't very fun and we keep getting blacklisted tags that we'd have to click through asterisks for anyway, so any help is appreciated!

Sorry if somebody else has already asked this question.. Don't have the time to google translate all of the names of the other discussions.
