Should I skip the base game and just play dynasties?

No. Just Buy Dynasties... You get both games. You will get two apps. Just download dynasties if you want extended map and factions.

Pharaoh is a limited version of Dynasties. If you want to limit yourself from all the content, then you can do that. If you want more stuff, you will never need pharaoh.

Not to disagree with Lawh, but the original game can play quite differently - it's much more Egypt-oriented and the Sea Peoples can be a real PITA. They can be easy to brush off in Dynasties, but in the original, I can remember feeling very smug about beating off the early 12 stack waves and building my cities up to be able to resist the 20 stacks when they came ... and then in The Great Wave, the 20 stacks were almost all Tier V ! Ha ha, did I take a pounding !

Dynasties does not need Pharaoh, and Pharaoh does not need Dynasties.

I think it is not. The original edition have specificites that the Dynasties edition not have (immortal major characters, different sea invaders, no familly trees ...). The game experience is not the same and is more focused on the Bronze Age collapsing.
But it is true that most of people don't play anymore the original edition when they start the Dynasties editions.
