The Dynasties edition has the bigger map, more factions, family tree etc etc. The OG Pharaoh is a more focused experience with a bigger sea peoples threat.
If you only want to play Dynasties then you dont need to download OG pharaoh. and vice versa. You only need to download both if you want to play both campaigns concurrently as you cant access the other game campaign if you only have one installed.
There is a lot of good mods on the workshop, but this one is the only one fixing the game's biggest issue, triviality of battles.
In my view both are great games in their own right (I have both installed on my computer and intend to continue playing them for years to come.)
Which you play depends on what kind of experience you're after.
* If you're after a more focused slightly more character based game that's built around the late bronze age collapse, the invasions of the Sea Peoples, and how that affected the Egyptian and Hittite Empires, and the people stuck between the two major powers, I'd go for Pharaoh.
* If you're after a more sandbox game closer to a typical Total War, with a broader cast of factions and cultures drawn from the wider late bronze age, family tree and dynastic mechanics, anachronistic cavalry, and some familiar faces from Troy, then I'd go Dynasties.
I see it as like two different cuts of a movie. Each has their own pros and cons and a slightly different approach to how they tell the story. Each has it's own fans, but they're both enjoyable.
Hope that helps.
All the Best,
Welsh Dragon.
Or if I want to experience both I need to play both independently?
To experience both you need both installed. You can't launch the Pharaoh campaign from Pharaoh Dynasties or visa versa.
With both installed you have two games listed in your Steam Library. Which you start decides which version of Pharaoh you play.
E.g. If I want to play Ramesses in Pharaoh I start Pharaoh, if I want to play Ramesses in Pharaoh Dynasties I start Pharaoh Dynasties.
Hope that helps.

For the avoidance of doubt, you get Dynasties as a free second game when you buy Pharaoh. It's not possible to buy Dynasties on its own.
