Elam is pretty terrible as a faction, but at least you're stuck in the corner.
I would argue that Irsu is one of the best starting factions. He's in a great position to expand anywhere and he can pick and choose which Canaanites to ally or conquer. He can also get a ridiculous amount of resources from post-battle/settlements to make up for what he can't upgrade.
Apparently Elam are bad because of their units being too bad but haven't tried them yet.
I heard the same about Elam lol, they do get horses tho I think
PS: Verified, they get horse archers even!
I got attacked as Thrace by four separate armies from four separate countries on the same turn as Thrace. This was on normal/normal diff with all the AI settings turned down to lowest in campaign settings.
Ramses is hard compared to other egyptians, but he gets access to all 5 resources fairly quickly, and in my opinion Cannaan infantry are better than Egypt local recuits, so once you get chariots you can easily deal with canaans and Egyptians.
Senakhte also dies so fast its easy to steal his court position.
