Computer and NES versions
Has anyone played BOTH the computer and NES version of the original Shadowgate?
Are the puzzles pretty much the same across the different versions? Is it really only the graphics that changed from port to port, and the NES version had music too?

i know the goblin room was a thing only in the computer versions, but other than that? :)

I've only ever known the NES version... a game that scared me oh so much as a young kid! I had so many nightmares about the Grim Reaper because of this game!

I've played the NES and 1993 Windows PC version. The PC version has a different inventory system (you can only carry so much and have to drop items as you progress) and the game can easily be made unwinnable unlike the NES version. For instance, all the spells in the PC version are on scrolls that can only be used once. Waste them in the wrong spot and you're screwed. The puzzles were otherwise the same. There is an extra death in the NES version (smashing the left mirror) to prevent an unwinnable state, since smashing that mirror on the PC destroys your hammer.

Oh man the games sounds so hardcore on computer! Good gravy... no internet faqs.. how did anyone beat anything in those days!? Lol

You should see the difficulty for text-based games. Spellbreaker was a real pain and I used a guide for it.

Crap! sounds awesome! true reward in those days was actually completing those games. nowadays they give you electronic trophies and badges before you finish the games!!! LOL. Old school gamers remind me of military vets!!! hardcore!!!

I like the NES one.... hard as hell but it stopped unfair sitauations from arrising. Computer version just sounds frustrating

Long live NES Shadowgate! :)

I first discovered Shadowgate on the NES. NES is the only version I have played and I totally loved it.

The NES version was more enjoyable in many respects, particularly since it had music. The benefit of the computer version was additional deaths (or more descriptive suicides).

Ya. When you go to consoles you usually get more censorship.

Did anyone play Shadowgate on early smartphones? We made it for them but those phones (like a Sony) didn't last long. They were more like Blackberries tbh.

My friend had a Palm OS version-- but it was impossible to play because the torch would go out the moment you stepped into the second room. There was no way to grab a new one and light it in time for some reason! Ha... and I thought that the computer version was hard!

Team Z, I would love an android version of this even though I have it for PC. It would be awesome to take The Living Castle with me on the go :-)
Also, If you could somehow (not sure if it's possible maybe steam cloud?) to start your game on your PC and then continue that same game on your phone?

That won't work, because Steam Cloud is proprietary. You might be able to copy a save file from the PC though...
