So what exactly is the reward when I hover on the resource node? I don't see exactly what is happening or what I got for it?

Hey friend, that's called a Golden Opportunity. Moving your mouse over the resource gives you the loot plus an additional 50% XP. This is basically a free gathering attempt with bonus XP. The answer to this question and many more can be found on the "How to Play" button.
