Booze for rumours, at least so far, appears to cost a lot more than it makes me. Typically I can't take advantage of it (don't have the resource or town is too far away) or simply obtuse. I will try it again and see if I am missing something. Regardless...rumours should be a way to make higher than normal returns....not the only way to profit.
It gets to the core problem with the game at the moment, margins are razor thin (if existent at all) and the only solution is to spend a ton of money (at least relative to potential profits early game) on a CHANCE at something. At the amount you currently have the buy/sell hedge differential way to high----,it would be more profitable for a merchant to stay in a city, buy from traveling merchants, and sell to the populous. I profit 5g/ore from purchasing it at the cheapest place I can find and sell it to a merchant who makes 10g/ore profit off what I sell him in the same city. It makes no sense.
As the game is now the margins are way too high, it's extreamly easy to make a profit and just grown and grow. You are probly just hiering people you do not need and that way increase your expenses too much.
