Sound gets cut off if voice chat is enabled using bluetooth headset
I've already mentioned this elsewhere, but since it seems to be a specific problem, I decided to open a new thread, wondering if anyone out there is experiencing the same thing.

If I have voice chat enabled while using bluetooth headsets, as soon as I start a game the sound gets cut off (no voices, no music, no sound fx). I've tried two different bluetooth headphones (both with a built-in mic), everything is fine in Steam settings, but the result was always the same. I have constant sound througout the game menus, though.
If I turn voice chat off or just set it to receive only, I have no problems starting a game with full sound, but then I am unable to communicate and let others know how scared like a little girl I am feeling at the moment.

The game author has already replied to me in another thread, hinting that it may be something related to my system configuration, but I've checked and double checked and everything seems to be in order. So... Any thoughts?

I feel that I'm missing half the fun by not being able to scream at other people's ears.

So as soon as the game starts recording your voice, all sound stops. Please check this page, maybe it helps: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1206-WUOH-3314

It appears that it's not the only game that suffers from this http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3025866 , so it could be a Steam voice chat thing.

Have you tried the setup with other games with integrated Steam voice chat, such as L4D?

I wasn't even aware of it, but White Noise Online is indeed the first game I tried playing with a bluetooth headset, so you may be on to something. I tried launching L4D2 but it gave me an error message, so I'm now in the process of re-installing it to try it later.
I also thought about Skype conflicting with things, so I tried shutting it down completely, but to no avail.

I'll try to find other games in my library that have a voice chat function and will then let you know about it soon. Thanks for looking into it!

So, I've just tried using one of my bluetooth headsets with L4D and the experience was even worse. In L4D, though the game detects sound input level from the mic in the audio options (you know, I talk and that coloured bar thingie goes up and down according to my voice), the sound also gets cut out in an offline single player game, regardless of voice chat being enabled or not! If I disable voice chat in White Noise Online (or set it to receive only), I am able to play with full sound (and hear other players' voices). In L4D, as long as my bluetooth headset is on, I get no sound in an offline game (though I get it in the game menus). I couldn't try any online games because, apparently, no one plays L4D anymore (there was no one there), but since a similar problem to that of White Noise Online persists even in offline single player mode, I guess it's irrelevant to try it online.

tl;dr it does seem to be a Steam problem. I never cared much for online voice chat while playing games except for White Noise Online, which is a bummer, as it seems I'll have to buy a non-bluetooth headset if I wish others to hear me cry like a baby while playing the game.

I know this is an ancient post, but this post seems to have sorted it: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/617328415062370252/

Will be testing it tonight.

Please let us know how it goes!

Yeah, it didn't work. So have resorted to getting a Wifi enabled headset (Turtle Beach i60).

sorry for reviving an old post, but it comes up pretty high on google.
i was gettin real sick of the bluetooth audio (headset not headphone) cutting off every time i entered a game in tf2.
the simplest fix is to turn your headset off then on and wait for pair, then it'll work, but more out of sync/laggy than before.
the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ fix is to use the "headphone" setting, i.e. selecting that as audio device - it won't cut off, but the sound is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful, like a string yoghurt telephone.
unusually today i thought outside the box - buy and use an inexpensive bluetooth audio transmitter. instead of using your computer's internal bluetooth, you buy this device that plugs into your green 3.5mm analog audio port, then sends that audio via bluetooth which you pair to your headset. you don't get microphone, you have no hardware control buttons, but you get one solid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ audio stream delivered to your headset that doesn't brick every time you enter a game. cons: you have to charge the transmitter.
hope it's useful to someone
A temporary fix is to disable your headset mic in the Sound menu and use a different one (either a USB-connected one or the internal mic if you have a laptop). It lets you use the stereo sound from your headset and still lets you talk through the seperate mic, but it is rlly annoying that you can't make full use of your headset...
If anyone still finds a real fix would love to know
