I'd say... A soft yes.

The two-player balancing feels like it could set up for some rather intricate competition, but only if both of you are willing to really get into it.

You could always add bots in for 3/4 player matches, but I find that doing that feels less personal.

Solo, though, I've been having a ton of fun just playing bot matches and challenging myself, and that's aside from playing with friends at all.

So yeah. I'd say maybe, leaning more towards yes.

So would 2 players and 2 bots be fun?

I'd say it certainly could be. From a strictly mechanical sense, the chaos of a 4P match is fantastic fun.

My only issue with mixing bots and humans is that moment when you kill a monster that's been pestering you, and instead of being able to rub it in your buddy's face, you notice... It was just the bot. That's what I mean by less personal- Just that fact that the person you're against isn't always someone sitting in the room with you that you can interact with.

But that could just be me- I tend to love local games, solely for the atmosphere it builds. So mixing humans and bots is something I don't really like doing anywhere; it isn't unique to Crawl at all.

Cool, I'll consider it. Any other recommendations for 2p local? I own lethal league crypt of the necrodancer and trackmania.

Lethal League is absolutely incredible. If you play online much, there's a good chance we've met before. :P

But for 2p local:
  • Nidhogg - Pretty strategic mix of fencing and tug of war. There's a lot of situation that'll make you hate each other. It's great. lol
  • Divekick - Super dumbed-down, super silly, fighting game, that only uses two buttons. It's certainly odd at first, but the rounds are fast and unusually tense.
  • Metal Slug 3 - Co-op for two players. The first time I played through it with a partner was at a friends place; Two of us were playing, one was just watching. We barely made it to the final boss when my teammate was out of continues, and I was on my last couple lives. I got knocked down to my one remaining life, and managed to finish the game. It was insanely nerve-wracking. The friend that was just watching said that it was like watching the perfect action movie.
  • Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe - Two-player mashup of Tetris Attack, and... a platformer. I don't think I could explain it much better than that, other that to say it is literally a platformer inside a puzzle game. I recommend finding videos.

There are others, but these are the ones I can think of with a pure focus on two players. And they're all really fun.
