I thought this was for Nosgoth :p
I just now saw this was for Crawl and it makes more sense and is definitely a very plausible thing to happen.
As was I. Good thing that's all cleared up.
basic monsters, gods, traps, swords, daggers, and i think bows. then there are the spells like fetid discharge, dodge roll, and hyperdash. this is plenty considering most games only last a couple minutes before someone reaches 10 and starts attempting the boss.
as you play you unlock more monsters with complicated things like healing, multiplying, ricochet projectiles and the necromancer who continues to be the bane of my existence with his summons and slime.
you unlock complicated trinkets like the ectoplasm slimes that frinkly i didnt know what they did when they were first added (now the tooltips are better). you unlock so many other pieces of scenery that frankly i cant remember what they all do. you unlock tombstones. you unlock shrines. you unlock more and more traps some of which are barely distinguishable from others.
now what does pacing them out do?
when you start it's like ok i'll try this guy, store discount, skeleton, beholder, gnome, ok we can upgrade at the end of each level, bosses are ... busy. cool some of these weapons on the higher floors are magic. game ends.
YOU UNLOCK GLUB, YOU UNLOCK NEW TRAPS, YOU UNLOCK NEW MONSTER EVOLUTIONS, YOU UNLOCK SLINGS AND CROSSBOWS.
cool lets try glub, you try the new evolution.
rinse repeat.
YOU UNLOCK NEW GOD, YOU UNLOCK NEW TRAPS, YOU UNLOCK NEW MONSTERS, YOU UNLOCK NEW WEAPONS.
rinse repeat
you quickly get introduced to everything and frankly it doesnt take that long to unlock everything.
as someone who has unlocked everything and continues to play when my friends are around. I miss having a staff on every 3rd floor. my friends and I dont want to lose to each other but we also dont want to lose our 5 skull names so the games tend to last longer now that we have unlocked everything.
