It's called looking ahead.
At the start of a chapter in the first game you can see what is needed to make a potential choice in the destiny page of the book. You can build up your stats (or job direction), build up willpower, and in order to get what you want you will need to make sacrifices to get there.
While we're on this train of thought, what if the game fixed this issue with an alternative system?
Say you reach the threshold but you're off by 1-2 points, maybe it can be made up for with willpower, say 5 points per missing point? This is a risky move and not all paths can afford you burning willpower so easily but still.
when i was playing playing sir brante's story, when i reached a point i do not like, or if the option is greyed out, i look at the numbers, see what went wrong, then i just restart from the chapter.
