Technically speaking, every zone is like that where you can basically skip it aside from the couple key objectives you need to accomplish to proceed. That said, much of the game is building and collecting materials. It’s technically not essential, but the game would be much harder if you don’t have effective weapons or armor for the things you have to fight.
thanks that explains it. i did do the basic "tutorial" esc part, i'm used to things like valheim and 7 days.
There's a forge there, guarded by encampments of orcs. And several roaming bears that are best avoided when you're starting out. They will whomp you if you mess with them.
I find that it's 100% worth clearing out the forge since you can smelt some ore in it without using any coal as fuel, this lets you save the coal for making the larger hearths and for crafting steel.
Agreed, it's just not worth the effort as they don't seem to drop any unique resources.
