Where do you learn storage chests?

Hello,

How and when do you learn your first chest?

We've been playing for a while now in sandbox mode and have not yet learned the recipe to make the simple wooden chest. We've placed the hearth, smelter, forge, pallets, etc, but no recipe for a chest is available.

Thanks for any help you can give; we've been storing stuff in a naturally spawning chest, but it's not a great area to build in.
