Yes, but it really shines in co-op.

The trick is to remember to set the Difficulty to Solo. It defaults to "Normal" which is intended for a group of dwarfs.

You can select the Difficulty when you create the World or Sandbox, and you can fine tune the Difficulty settings once you have loaded and started the World/Sandbox.
