Scales?

We've been at it for a while now, tried googling and what not. And the only solution we can see so far is to join/create a new world. Is this the only way to get enough scales from drakes/fell beasts? Nothing seems to be spawning. How do you get these?

The drakes spawn in special deep fissure rooms, the ones that have a huge crevasse in the center with a board running across. If you build platforms or rope ladders down into the crevasse, you can actually run into more down there (along with baby balrogs). So they're effectively a renewable resource. I don't want to say infinite, but definitely more then the few you run into in the main story locations.

i just got hit off a cliff by a falling rock. now i am furious

i was right next to my loot from when i died and another rock broke the platform i was on now i am even more furious

Once you ascend the Eastern Stairs, creatures that drop scales become more common.
