Useless map just leaves me confused and lost!
I've never been in a game with a more useless "map" than this one! All it does is tell you what area you're in and not ANYTHING ELSE ! How in the world is this going to help? I keep getting stuck in the the mines and can't figure out how the hell to get anywhere else! I'm in my second attempt at this game and I keep getting stuck in the mines. The only difference I can see in the first seed is that the way down had a series of wood platforms to jump down i and in this last one it has a large stone tower with stairs down. They're both confusing and seems like the lower mine section I've gotten to both times is all dead ends. This is just frustrating and I really don't like frustrating!! At this point I'm ready to trash this game and move on. This "seed world" business seems to work for some and frustrate others.

The only problem i have with the map is that you can't switch floors, it just mashes all the floors together which can cause incredible confusion and make it worthless in some areas.

Would love to use wall torches, but in 3.5 hours, STILL CANNOT get NOT EVEN ONE to stick to ANY wall. What is the trick? Have a horrid time with the floor torches too. Am I really THICK, or is is a normal issue with this game? Have tried to move in, move out, rotate, raise it, lower it, all for nothing! If this "game" is about building, why so stubborn? Any ideas?

I used floor torches. I left bread crumb trails all over the map. I had a whole system for it. I never really had any issues placing torches.

I made "triangles" like an arrow by placing two torches on either side of a hallway or a doorway. Then I put one in the middle, but moved forward or backwards so it forms a triangle. The one in the middle would the tip of the arrow, pointing which way back to bases, or other locations.

Other places I put a string of floor torches. Some times leading from one doorway all the way across a whole room to another doorway. It reminded me that all the other doorways were dead ends, and I could sklp them.

And in some places I put a whole row of torches across a hallway like a wall. That was shorthand to myself that there was NOTHING past that point anymore. All mining desposits mined out, all chests looted, all breakable broken, etc. Everything strip mined out.

The map is absolute solid and enough. Try to remember things. I know it is very difficult these days when everything is shown to your smartphone. Stages are not that large to get confused.

Thanks for the tip. I have at least placed a few floor torches, but they still are a pain to set where you want them to go. Again, thanks.
I don't have fast travel yet and I cannot for the life of me remember how to get back out of the mines. I just keep running into dead ends. Sounds like there's no solution other than to start over?

Use torches to mark off dead ends. I had a system for putting just 1 torch directly in the middle of a doorway, to remind myself that there was nothing left through there. No resources, no unexplored areas, etc.

Also, as bad as the map is (and I agree it's bad), it will have marks on the four sides of a map "room" that tell you if there's any unexplored areas in that direction. Often when I thought I was stuck, I would see little bars or dashes on the edge of one map square and when I went looking I found a smalllllllll little tunnel that lead to WHOLE HUGE new areas of map.
I agree with all the rest of these posts. I have lost two characters in Moria because I can't find my way up to repair and build or you fall into a nest and are unable to retrieve your gear because you are surrounded.. Just plain stupid design for such a critical part of the game. I get the idea though that the devs have given up patching and listening to improvements. Anybody know if that is true so I can warn others about purchasing it? To bad they slacked off. It is a 85% great game. Also allowing you one save would help. At least before you delve into the bowels of Moria you have a save point.
I highly recommend marking the map where you go up/down but stay in the same zone so you can find these vertical changes later it’s quite easy to do “m” and then “x” to create a map marker on the spot your standing
I agree that the map is bad. It's not as bad in starting areas where there isn't much verticality, but it gets worse over time.
I also hate how you can't color markers, everything is the same color, so nothing stands out. I want to place down a marker with special color so I can quickly tell what I marked.
The only two areas in the campaign where the map really bothered me were the Mines of Moria and Caradhras where we have multiple layers of rooms, but on the map it looks like it's one single level. Right now I am chasing one tunnel entrance showing in my map and I don't have found a way yet to get there; the map shows it right inside my room but apparently it's a level above or below me. It would be lovely if the map showed these levels, too, with markers on where you can switch these levels.

the map is horrible. there is no mod for it either.
I'm old and used to reading not very helpful paper maps. (They were pretty helpful compared to nothing, but lacking compared to today's online GPS driven maps.

Some games don't have maps at all. This show you where there is a large area that you haven't explored yet. It doesn't show if you miss small areas. It provides some help, but doesn't let you use the map for all navigation.

Map markers are pretty precise, and you can also track your location within an area.

I don't think procedural generation is why the maps are the way they are. The maps do take into account how your game areas were put together.

They maps appear intended to provide only limited information so that most exploring is done without focusing on the map.
