Would love to use wall torches, but in 3.5 hours, STILL CANNOT get NOT EVEN ONE to stick to ANY wall. What is the trick? Have a horrid time with the floor torches too. Am I really THICK, or is is a normal issue with this game? Have tried to move in, move out, rotate, raise it, lower it, all for nothing! If this "game" is about building, why so stubborn? Any ideas?
I used floor torches. I left bread crumb trails all over the map. I had a whole system for it. I never really had any issues placing torches.
I made "triangles" like an arrow by placing two torches on either side of a hallway or a doorway. Then I put one in the middle, but moved forward or backwards so it forms a triangle. The one in the middle would the tip of the arrow, pointing which way back to bases, or other locations.
Other places I put a string of floor torches. Some times leading from one doorway all the way across a whole room to another doorway. It reminded me that all the other doorways were dead ends, and I could sklp them.
And in some places I put a whole row of torches across a hallway like a wall. That was shorthand to myself that there was NOTHING past that point anymore. All mining desposits mined out, all chests looted, all breakable broken, etc. Everything strip mined out.
Use torches to mark off dead ends. I had a system for putting just 1 torch directly in the middle of a doorway, to remind myself that there was nothing left through there. No resources, no unexplored areas, etc.
Also, as bad as the map is (and I agree it's bad), it will have marks on the four sides of a map "room" that tell you if there's any unexplored areas in that direction. Often when I thought I was stuck, I would see little bars or dashes on the edge of one map square and when I went looking I found a smalllllllll little tunnel that lead to WHOLE HUGE new areas of map.
I also hate how you can't color markers, everything is the same color, so nothing stands out. I want to place down a marker with special color so I can quickly tell what I marked.
the map is horrible. there is no mod for it either.
Some games don't have maps at all. This show you where there is a large area that you haven't explored yet. It doesn't show if you miss small areas. It provides some help, but doesn't let you use the map for all navigation.
Map markers are pretty precise, and you can also track your location within an area.
I don't think procedural generation is why the maps are the way they are. The maps do take into account how your game areas were put together.
They maps appear intended to provide only limited information so that most exploring is done without focusing on the map.
