Is there a way to farm bats
Just arrived at the second level and would really like to have some farming. Have been living just from mushrooms until now. But I need bat dropings for that, and i only have 4 from the 4 I killed so far. Haven't seen them randomly spawn ever, only as part of a horde.

So is there a reliable way to farm them?

me and my friend have only got 4 bats- all from a horde while we were in the third game stage. 2 game stages later and still no bats. Your saying when a horde spawns it can for a spawn if your up high? is that guaranteed the only way they spawn or can they spawn when a patrol shows up cause I found one in my solo world and haven't even gotten past game stage 2 (2 being the elven quarter, 3 being the next area the map changes color and so on not counting orctown)

Trudge around in the lower deeps at night. they will find you
I ran into a bat twice on stage 1. It needs to be at night, and you need to be significantly higher than the local ground. I think I encountered a two orc patrol and immediately ran up two flights of stair and turned to fight them. The addition "guy" they summoned was a bat. Both times were in the Westgate housing area.

I've been unable to farm more bats. I can't seem to get patrols when I'm by those stairs, and when I do get patrols then I can't climb before the third guy shows up.

In a sandbox world on The Second Deep I was farming granite in some connected caves, and there were bats in two consecutive caves each time I rested and went back for more resources.
You can try go at night, because bats are nocturnal, find a patrol 3,4,5 goblins and you can do this in mines of Moria. Make quick platform and climb high as you can and also goblins need to attack you the whole time. When you finish climbing stay there for 10 sec and then climb down and move from one side of the chunk to another that should spawn bats. I was able to do this and farm 20 bats drop in like 5 min.

P.S. I did this on campaign in the mines of moria part of the map. When you go right from the camp where you find the broken map stone.
For bats to spawn, you really need to encounter them for the 1st time in the Mines of Moria.
Once encounter, there are a few ways to get them to spawn,

1. Base Raids - if you have no roof sections covering you base, bats will spawn with the raid force and attack you inside your base sections while the orcs try to break your doors down.
Also without a roof, bats may occasionally spawn in your base section and come say hello if you make too much noise.

2. In the game world, bats can be found spawned at night in most mine sections of the map, so Mines of Moria, Lower Depths, and the other 2 mines sections later.

3. Mining/Triggering Orc Raid through Noise - In sections where you have not killed the orc boss to make the section safe, the noise meter will slowly grow and by making enough noise trigger an attack on you where you are in the mines. This can be easily done by just going around and mining until a raid is triggered. Once a raid is triggered, if you are off the ground or up high in a mining node section, where orcs are not likely to reach you, they will spawn bats to come attack you.
I first got bats in West Gate, and I'm gotten several more since then.

I watched a video where she showed that when goblins/orcs scream, it summons reinforcements. If you are up high when they scream (and it is night), then the reinforcements will be 2 bats.
