Aiming can be tricky. As a controller player, i always use the trick of holding in the left trigger while mining, so as to better aim where the swings hit. That and when tunneling, I make a point of aiming forward and a bit up, to better guide the creation of tunnels and spiral shafts. Using this method I no longer accidentally destroy the platforms I'm standing on.

But its not even aiming. Its like a massive AOE no matter if you aim or not. I dont want to destroy everything around me when i mine. I can see why this launched on steam for 20 bucks and had to leave epic.

The aiming "square" is difficult to see at times. As Knowmad said, the actual "stuff" removed is a circle, and goes deep. I can't tell you how many times I've hit a table, only to damage the floor underneath.

It is definitely annoying, and I experienced a lot of that last night while trying to remodel and repair a house I decided to occupy. But with a bit of trial and error I was eventually able to find the "sweet spot" between aiming, posturing, and camera angling, for doing precision spot demo in tight spaces without damaging everything else. So far now the only thing I haven't found a way to destroy in those old houses (without breaking the floor, that is) are the broken ladders on the floor, and I'm not wholly convinced they aren't just a purely visual decoration.

I agree it could be improved. Figuring out that sweet spot involved a lot of frustration, and the sphere of effect really should be a lot smaller, especially if you're using the trigger-aim feature to make aiming more precise. But in a pinch, alternating back and forth to a repair hammer while doing demo can help keep the "collateral" damage from destroying things you don't want destroyed.

Look for the white cursor (like a small white diamond shape) when using your pick. If you just blinding swing the pick, it is going to hit anything near your feet.

it's kind of hard to make a game where you can destroy most everything with an ax have things not get destroyed when you swing an ax at it. BTW, just because you have the masterwork pick doesn't mean you have to use it when house clearing. If you are destroying your mining platforms then place them where you won't hit them....

Are you using the legendary pickaxe? Its mining aoe is MUCH larger than a normal pick.
Dr. Sinclair Sep 3, 2024 @ 12:28am
basically... you'd rather mine 1 tiny square at a time
got it
how about being a little intelligent about it instead of complaining...? mine out the top and use the rock itself as a platform...?
and for christ's sake don't use a pickaxe to clear items in houses, you have a weapon for a reason.

Actually double checked for OP
hitting a rock or an ore does not damage a platform or anything directly next to it
so no, you're not doing it while you "mine"
most likely you're destroying the piece of rock that was holding your platform in the first place. believe it or not these things cannot fly.

IT doesnt damage the platform you build it damages the platforms that pre existed. Hense mining in the large mine past the elven district destroys all the platforms your on in certain areas dropping you to your death.

You have to aim straight up to avoid hitting them. Pretending ♥♥♥♥ is good when its not is how things get worse and worse.
