Unable to join the friend server

For 2 hours we have been trying to play together, but this is not possible. I can't join my boyfriend and he can't join me. We both get a black screen and the game hangs. Are there any known errors?

Had this problem in cross play - not sure if that is your case but if it is, try this. Solved it by having the Xbox player fully close out of the game, as in not just suspend it but fully exit. Then they reopened and were able to connect.

It's crucial that it be a manual game exit. Rebooting the Xbox won't do it as it doesn't actually exit the game. It didn't work until he exited and re started.
