Starter Storage Chest

I've been playing for a while now on a new server and I haven't learned how to make things like a simple storage chest and stone walls. Any clues on what I'm missing here to learn those?

the first chest only needs iron ingots and wood afaik

The basic chest needs wood. That's it. Nothing else. The T2 chest needs steel and elvish wood, though.

Not sure what triggers it, though... OP, what have you done as far as base building goes? Smelter, smithy, stone fireplace?

Sandbox mode. I created a new sandbox world, and as soon as I put down the 2nd level hearth, it all showed up. I had that on the world in question, so I guess I just had an odd bug.
