I think you need a building in your base as well. Bellows perhaps.
NPC Sep 3, 2024 @ 11:23pm
I think you might just need to have _a_ bellows in one of your bases. I got the steel recipe after fixing the forge of Narvi, and I didn't have to build a bellows, and I make the steel directly from a plain old normal furnace with no bellows, for 3 iron and 3 coal. However, I did much much earlier find and repair a forge in a ruined house, and that forge already had a bellows, so I wonder if that triggered it for me?

If you want to try, go to one of those ruined town areas, look for a house with both a ruined furnace and a ruined forge. They always have a bellows next to them. I believe.

thanks for the reply, my "house" has a repaired forge with a bellow but i can't make steel so maybe ill have to run around more and see if another forge or furnace can unlock it

Curious, did you at least unlock the steel hammer and steel pick recipes? I figured they were all a package deal but now I'm not so sure anymore.

Don't you smelt the first steel ingots from the Great Forge itself? You have the giant smelter and the forge in front of it. In this smelter you should be able to smelt the first steel ingots (after you repaired the Forge).

@ OP - Bellows allows you to forge Steel.

This is incorrect. A bellows is not required to forge steel. I have just started a new game and confirmed this. In order to acquire steel knowledge, you must do this:

1. Make your way to the Great Forge of Narvi
2. Repair the Great Forge of Narvi
3. Successfully defend against the horde that is summoned
4. Interact with the repaired Great Forge of Narvi again after the fight

After step 4, you acquire the knowledge to make Steel ingots at any furnace, no bellows required.

The bellows is necessary for Copper and Tin and Bronze, but not Steel.

Are you playing sandbox or story?

Campaign mode. I don't even have the knowledge to make a Bellows yet on this save, and I'm making steel at my base's furnace. A bellows is not required for making steel. However, you must make sure and interact with the Great Forge of Narvi again after defeating the horde, if you don't you won't get the steel recipe.

Just following this further, after smelting steel ingots at my no-bellows furnace (and learning the steel hammer recipe in the process), I ventured further onward with a steel pick in hand, was able to bust through the Compacted Dirt and get to the actual Mines region. Once there, I located and mined my first cooper vein, and only upon picking up that first dropped copper ore did the Bellows recipe finally unlock.

I checked the bellows recipe, and it requires 4 steel ingots (among other things). So now I am even more extra puzzled by people telling others the bellows is required for steel. If it is required for making steel ingots, but requires 4 steel ingots to make, how is the player expected to be able to make it? And if you don't learn it until you mine copper - which is found after breaking through a wall of compacted dirt that requires a steel pick (which requires steel ingots to forge), how is the player expected to know it before learning the steel ingot recipe?

Are people learning the bellows recipe in some other way in Campaign mode, before fixing the Forge of Narvi? Or is this all sandbox mode, and the recipes are different?

I''m trying to remember what unlocked Bellows in sandbox.

Your confusion, my confusion is part of the problem. Sandbox is, imo, significantly different from Story.

As I've said many times - the gameplay loop is "off". Maybe for Sandbox only.

Okay yeah you're right on the differences. Started up a new game and it looks like Sandbox mode has some drastically different build requirements on things. The Stone Hearth, for one, requires freakin' bronze ingots to make in Sandsbox, for some reason. Meanwhile the Bellows in Sandbox only requires Iron, not Steel. Weird!

Now you understand my frustration when I watch videos and see discussions on these boards.

Hence why I now preface almost every response to a question with - "Story or sandbox?"

Sounds like you're in Sandbox mode, then. Build a bellows near your Forge and Furnace. That's how you unlock steel ingots.
