This FAQ post will be updated over time so be sure to check back for any additions to the list. We’ll try to cover the most common questions we receive from the community about The Lord of the Rings: Return To Moria™ here and add to it over time.

What is The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria?

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, the only survival crafting video game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth™, the iconic fantasy world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria follows the Dwarves as they embark on a new adventure to reclaim their legendary home of Moria beneath the Misty Mountains. Players will join forces to survive, craft, build and explore the iconic, sprawling mines. Courageous expeditioners will need to be vigilant as mysterious dangers await.

When is Return to Mora (RtM) Set?

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is set in the 4th Age of Middle-earth.

Where is RtM Set / What does the game world look like?

Set in a procedurally generated Dwarven realm of Moria, no two adventures will be the same, and every expedition is traversable either solo or online with companions

How many players can play together?

Up to 8 players can play together in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Steam version

Who do you play as?

Players become part of Dwarven Legend as they create their own Dwarf in the custom character creator. Dwarves can be customized in a variety of ways to create a unique Dwarven identity. Then, during gameplay, players can find and craft armor and weapons to further enhance their unique style.

Can all Dwarves have beards?

Players can customize their Dwarf in a number of ways including a variety of beards or no beard at all!

Can players name their Dwarf?

Yes, players can give their Dwarf a name of their choosing when creating their Dwarf.

Is RtM gameplay be first person, or third person?

RtM gameplay is in third person view.

Does RtM have a narrative / story?

In the Campaign, players will play through a new adventure set in the 4th age of Middle Earth. Free Range Games have worked closely with Middle-earth Enterprises, TS Luikart, David Salo and Corey Olsen to ensure that the game stays true to the lore of The Lord of the Rings while allowing players to delve deep into their own adventure.

Is RtM linear or non-linear?

While the Campaign is a crafted narrative path with major generated elements, players may instead choose to play a Sandbox world. This is a fully scrambled, non-linear experience through Moria. The world building is all there but the narrative takes a backseat to player freedom.

What kind of items can be crafted?

Craft and loot legendary Dwarven armor, tools, weapons and structures. Rebuild ancient forges to strengthen, repair and enchant gear. Upgrade and unlock new technologies and fantastical machines.

When will RtM be released on Steam?

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be available in the Fall of 2024. A more specific date will be announced this summer.

Will RtM be on Steam Deck at launch?

We are currently evaluating the Steam Deck as part of our development effort. We will update you here and in official posts, if we can commit to this by our launch timeframe!

Is RtM be available on other services / platforms?

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is also available now on PlayStation 5 and Epic Game Store. It will be coming to Xbox Series X|S in the Fall 2024.

Is RtM Early Access upon release?

There is no Early Access for RtM

What are the System Requirements for RtM on PC?

The minimum and recommended system requirements are available on the Steam Store page.

When will Preorders open for RtM?

We do not have any specific information about future pre-orders at this time. If any pre-orders for RtM open up we will announce that.

Does the Steam version of RtM have controller support?

Yes, RtM has full controller support for Xbox controllers.. Please note that if you are using another type of controller the controls may not perform as intended.

Will RtM have dedicated servers?

There are no dedicated servers at this time. The team is still investigating them for a future update. Multiplayer saves are hosted by 1 player who can invite others to their game using a passcode.

Will RtM have crossplay?

RtM will support crossplay between Steam and the Epic Game Store versions on PC. Watch this space for exciting future announcements about crossplay on other platforms.

Will there be mod support for RtM?

Mods are not directly supported for RtM, but we know they are vital to some player’s experience and appreciate the effort it takes to make them. We take no steps to block Mod usage.

What areas of the map are destructible in RtM?

There are few problems a dwarf can't fix by bashing it with a pickaxe. However they would never damage the bones of the mountain. And of course some of the great walls and pillars built at the founding of Khazad-dum will stand for all time. But all of the ruins, the statues, rock, plants, mining scaffolds, orc constructions, and debris (to name a few) can be destroyed.

Is RtM made in the Unreal Engine?

Is RtM an official LOTR game?

Yes, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is approved by and made with guidance from the team at Middle-earth Enterprises

Is RtM linked to the Films / TV Show?

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria™ is an independent game set in the 4th Age of Middle-earth and is not related to the Film or TV franchises.

What updates has RTM had since its initial release in October 2023?

Since the initial release of the game the team has made two major releases which have improved every aspect of the game. Here are the major highlights:

• Added Sandbox mode for players who want a more challenging and non-linear survival experience.
  
• Players can now adjust the difficulty of the game including Story, Solo, and Hard modes. They can also fine tune many specific values such as drop rates and combat difficulty. This can even be done during gameplay in case you need help out of a tricky situation or if you’re feeling brave and want to turn everything up for a serious challenge!
  
• Major overhaul of the building snaps and stability system. Building is now a much easier and more satisfying experience.
  
• Added the ability to pause the game when offline in single player.
  
• Major fixes to the final boss fight to make it as epic as we imagined.
  
• Added an ambient musical score when roaming around and when at your hearth.
  
• Overhauled the rewards for combat, as well as tuned the amount of combat needed.
  
• Added better VFX and SFX to combat to give it a better weight.
  
• Major changes to tuning resource drops and crafting costs in the Campaign
  
• Added many quality of life features to storage, crafting and collecting items.
  
• Overall improvement to performance, especially in multiplayer
  
• Revised many locations that made it hard to build on or where at odd angles making it hard to match up player building to the environment.
  
• Updated the lighting of the game.
  
• Fresh visual design for the map to make it easier to navigate.
  
• Added many new armor and weapons.
  
• Added decorations for your base and home.

How do I get unstuck from being under the map?

It says 3rd person view only, but somehow during play, it switched me to 1st person view and now I cannot get back to 3rd person. Been playing forever, and this is first time it happened. It seems some key/mouse combo switched me, and it's stuck in it.
