And yes the coop mode works with each person picking a hero, if only 2 people play in the campaign they each draw an extra card to compensate for the lack of a third character
However the entoire campaign can be played in coop, and you and a buddy or two can even play casual or custom multiplayer games in a team.
Only ranked and multiplayer leagues are "Singleplayer" exclusive
[also, fyi, co-op by definition means 'against AI' so don't worry about that :) ]
There's full campaign co-op, and the casual multiplayer team mode can be played with friends against AI in a co-op-like manner.
