Black Mirror I

Can't get past "Display Mode UnSupported."
Tried all the setup settings. Running Win 7 on a Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti with a 42" Sony Bravia monitor. Any help appreciated. Tried also playing with the compatibility tab on the main .exe to no avail.

Please have a look at this posting: Link

Make sure that you've chosen the following options in the NVidia Control panel settings:
- "Perform scaling on" -> "GPU"
- "Override the scaling mode set by games and programs" -> activated
- scaling option -> "Aspect ratio"

At the moment the NVidia control panel is obviously set to don't let the video card do scaling, but to pass the resolution of programs/games 1:1 to the monitor. And your monitor either can't handle the game resolution 800x600 or scaling is disabled in the monitor options. Doesn't matter - the settings I described above should fix the problem.

Thank you! I will try these setting as soon as I get home! Very much appreciated!

I got the same msg but am running Asus 7970 eyefinity. with the amd catalyst control centre. tried looking for a similar setting to what you described but cant get it working. It keeps wanting to switch to 16bbp then says "unsupported".

Please help.

Well the posting I've linked also has some info about the respective ATI/AMD Catalyst settings:

To force the video card do the scaling you have to activate "Enable GPU scaling".

With the video card doing the scaling you have the following options:
- Maintain spect ratio: example image[bakhtosh.bplaced.net]
- Scale image to full panel size: example image[bakhtosh.bplaced.net]
- Use centered timings: example image[bakhtosh.bplaced.net]

So you should try that. What I don't know is if there are any additional settings for eyefinity that has to be done. But a multi-display usage for Black Mirror (that has a fix resolution 800x600) also doesn't make much sense...

SO... I have the exactly same problem but that did not help...

Are you using an NVidia, AMD or Intel graphics card/unit?
Asking since the AMD driver design changed since I wrote the quoted posting (Catalyst to Crimson). The setting still exist but is located elsewhere. I don't know if the Intel drivers have a similar setting.

So are you sure that you've forced the graphics drivers to let the graphics card/unit to scale all resolutions lower than the native display resolution to upscale to the native display resolution (GPU scaling enabled)?

A display not supporting 800x600 was the most common cause of the "Display Mode UnSupported" in the past.

But I can think of other possible causes also. And things you could try.

But first you have to find out which is the Steam installation folder for Black Mirror. I can be done like this:
- In the Steam client choose LIBRARY
- Rightclick at the Black Mirror entry an choose 'Properties'.
- Go to LOCAL FILES and choose BROWSE LOCAL FILES...
(the file explorer opens showing the installation folder of Black Mirror)
- keep the path/folder displayed in the address bar in mind
(usually something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mirror)
- Of course you can always find it again using these steps

On thing that often causes error messages (but usually different ones) or crashes is the color mode the games uses. You can chooses between two different ones. Just go to the installation folder of Black Mirror (see above) and double-click at the file 'Config.exe'. Now a config windows opens. At 'Cutscenes' choose '800x600x32 RGB' and then click at 'Setup'. Afterwards try to start the games. If that doesn't work, start the 'Config.exe' again but now choose '800x600x32 RGB', click at 'Setup' and try to start the game.

If it doesn't work with neithe color mode, try to play the game in window mode instead of in fullscreen mode using a special tool. Download the Tool DXWND with fitting presets: Link[bakhtosh.bplaced.net]
Extract the downloaded file 'BM_Windowed.zip' in the Black Mirror installation folder (see above). Make sure that no additional subfolder gets created by the extraction tool. Afterwards you should find the files 'dxwnd.bat', 'agds.exe' and the subfolder 'DXWND' in the Black Mirror installation folder. If its like that now double-click at the filde 'dxwnd.bat'. Now first a small window DXWND should appear and about 5 seconds later Black Mirror should launch in a window.

If both things don't work please post what exactly happens (crashes, error messages, description doesn't seem to fit) if you try to change the color mode or run the game in windowed mode with DXWND.
