Black Mirror I

Black Mirror I

Almost All My Games Work: Except for Black Mirror (HELP!!)
So this form was made while i was attempting to fix SEVERAL games that were not working correctly. Since starting it ive gotten almost every game to work.

Except this one. Ive almost spent more time on this game than all the rest, and i havnt played a second of it.

NO IDEA WHY! Cannot get it to work. Every time i start the game up i get the year and copyright stuff at the top of the screen, then an error message saying the exe has stopped woring.

Ive had no progress so id love to hear from ya.

!DOSBox DOS Emulator has stopped working HELP!

First off, I've never been this desperate to where I had to post about a problem. Usually someone else has posted about it and I fix it from the suggestions of you fine people. This time I have to come to the source. Here is the problem...

I'm not really sure when this happened but suddenly anything that used DosBox won't run. I see the whole DosBox logo, the screen goes black, then this error pops up.

I only realized this because I purchased games today from the summer sale and many will not play.

Effected games are:

Black Mirror
Blood: one unit whole blood
Gabriel Knight
Harvester
Hexen: beyond....
Hexen: shadow of....
Hexen: II
Heretic
Wolfenstein
Wolfe stein 3D
Wolfenstein Spear of destiny
Arx Fatalis
Space Quest series

Also: Lucas arts games that used to work fine are now playing audio but no picture. The screen remains black.

Games include:
Loom
The dig
Indy and fate of atlantas
Indy and last crusade
Etc.

Using a laptop, i7, 8gb ram, integrated Intel graphics card, running Windows 10.

Please help! I'm very bad with Computers and am at a loss for what to do!

I don't really know where to post this so I've put it a few places. No one has responded yet, I'll update if I get any more info.

Thanks everybody :-)

EDIT: SO this problem kinda bloomed into more crazyness. I posted the same thing elsewhere and this is where we are now: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/2592234299531796223/

EDIT 2: Everything works except: Black Mirror (only the first one), Space Pillgram, SafeCracker, and I still cant get the Lucas Arts games to work through steam. I CAN use scumm, which i am, but this dosnt allow for screenshots or playtime through steam. This is a bummer, because i wanted to write a review on the game but cannot show that ive played more than a few hours.

If you look at the subfolder '\SteamApps\common\The Black Mirror' of your Steam installation folder, is there a file called 'config.exe' present? If so, double-click at it, choose '800x600x32 YUV' for the cutscene and click at 'Setup'. Try to start the game. If that doesn't work, double-click a the 'config.exe' again and choose '800x600x32 RGB'. Try to start the game. Sometimes only one mode works with certain video drivers.

Make also sure that the GPU scaling in your video card driver settings is activated and (in case of an NVidia card) the option to override the scaling mode set by games and programsis set.

Just to be sure...
You wrote config file. This sounds like you've tried to edit a file with a text editor...
While I meant the config.exe which is a tool with drop down boxes to select different options. Are you sure you did this? This tool sometimes confuses people because it always shows a default setting if you start it and not the last selected settings. But it works. If you choose a setting and then exit the tool with a click at "Setup" the settings are saved. A lot of crashes when trying to start the game can be solved by choosing an RGB or YUV setting.

Yuck !! ;)
Integrated Intel graphics are known to have poor driver support and sometimes lack in compatibility and performance. They got better among the past 10 years or so.

So if the config.exe settings don't solve the problem there are a couple of things you can try.

1. Open the Intel video driver settings tool and look for scaling options. I know that the Intel video driver settings tool have such an option. But the menu differs from driver to driver version or from chip type to chip type. Here's a screenshot that gives you an idea what to search for: Link[cdn.windowsreport.com]
Like in the screenshot "maintain aspect ratio/scale to full screen" and "center image/override application settings" should be checked. The exact phrase might vary from driver version to driver version.

2. If 1. doesn't work try to play the game in window mode instead of in fullscreen mode using a special tool. Download the Tool DXWND with fitting presets: Link[bakhtosh.bplaced.net]
Extract the downloaded file 'BM_Windowed.zip' in the Black Mirror installation folder (the folder with the "config.exe" and the "agds.exe"). Make sure that no additional subfolder gets created by the extraction tool. Afterwards you should find the files 'dxwnd.bat', 'agds.exe' and the subfolder 'DXWND' in the Black Mirror installation folder. If its like that now double-click at the filde 'dxwnd.bat'. Now first a small window DXWND should appear and about 5 seconds later Black Mirror should launch in a window.
