Does anyone actually use planks?

Is there any use for plants that a winch hook can't do better?
The plans are way too thin and unweildy to place and i've yet to encounter a scenario where a winch hook wasn't more than enough

Been asking myself the same question.
I only one found spot that felt designed specifically for planks, but you could just drive 20m further to bypass it entirely.

Yeah there are some bridge spots which they are useful for, winch wont do the job.

You will in Algeria. There's ledges that are just too tall. You could winch up with a point but I'd rather save that for later in the trail just in case. In Canada I never needed them.

Planks seem kinda useless. There is no traction on them so you can easily slide off of them unless they are perfectly placed, and heaven help you if you have them too close together or too far apart. Cool idea, but they seem worthless unless you are crossing a gap between two mostly flat surfaces of roughly equal height. For some reason the way traction works (or rather doesn't) in this game makes me skid off almost every time. Easier to just take the portable winch.

In Canada only in the last trial i had to use them to reach the final part. Algeria has more use for those.

Planks were very useful on two trials so far. Much easier and less yank than with winges.

Tbh if they were a lil bit wider, had better traction, and had a placement mode that places both down beside each other at the perfect space between each other, i'd use them way more.

Havent tried them but i would only use them if you could reuse them, aka collect them back and use them several times.
The Winch Hook is superior in so many ways and not prone to physique oddities, you can also use it in multiple ways.
The boards/planks are just for a very specific niche use and i think thats sad.

If however they would be able to be used several times, i would def. pick them.

Just about the only advantage I can think of for planks: they function irrespective of your winch cable length or vehicle weight, which isn't saying much since they also suffer from all the problems folks have already mentioned (no traction, irregular placement, etc)

I bought the item slot upgrade thinking you would need them to build bridges...

I think the only upgrade that has any purpose is the longer winch. Everything else is throwing your points away.

I have made good use of planks, though admittedly I haven't been needing them as often as I expected.
