This especially comes out with his ex-girlfriend. She’s very bad tempered in his presence but all her complaints about him are clearly true and he piles on a few more reasons for her to hate him over the course of chapter 1.
Maybe it’s setting up a character arc where Rufus will become a better man? Maybe for Goal’s sake? Although as it is his attitude towards her is very selfish. “I found her so she’s mine!” is an idea he openly exclaims (or whines) more than once. He only likes her becaue she's from Elysium, anwyay. I think she's supposed to be pretty, too, but her noseless pseudo-anime face looks kinda weird to me.
This is only the first chapter. Here's hoping it gets better from here.
