How do you get tier 1 materials from a tier 2 machine?

It wasn't explained anywhere that a tier 2 machine would automatically gobble up materials from a tier 1 machine. I have a contract for tier 1 materials, how do I extract them once they are in a tier 2 machine?

To be clear, I do not need tier 2 materials, just tier 1 - I had assumed that you would at least be able to choose output, but I can't see any options. Please help!

You can't.
The only way is to not connect the tier 2 machine to the tier 1 machine, and when you want tier 2 stuff than you have to manually put the items from the tier 1 machines into the tier 2 machines.

Yep it really is a thing that the devs totally never even thought about, but it is what it is.
Also it's the exact same thing later on if you want only tier 2 stuff not just tier 3 stuff.

Well it's still a really good game, and a fun way to waste some time.

Yeah, it doesn't ruin it by any means, just frustrating. At the early stage wasting 50kg of plastic like that is hard to avoid failing a contract. It's a bit of a motivation killer, but I enjoy the core loop a lot, so will give it a couple of days...

And thanks for the heads-up about T2-T3, I will absolutely bear that in mind!

Would love to be able to access the storage of the higher tier machines to take what is needed rather than sending it back through the tier 1 machine that I then have to disconnect from the other machines.

items from T2 and T3 machines are all 1 kg each so if you put an item from either a T2 or T3 you only get 1 kg of material so items from a T2 would have a loss of 1 KG and items from T3 machines would have a loss of 2+ KG depending on the item

for example:
Sawdust costs 1kg of wood material
Fibreboard costs 2 sawdust ( 2KG of wood material)
wooden boxes cost 2 fibreboard (4 KG of wood material
Wood Briquettes cost 2.3 fibreboard (A bit under 5 KG of wood Material)

Sawdust, Fibreboard, Wood Boxes, Wood Briquettes all have a weight of 1 KG so shredding any of those would give you 1 kg of wood material
