Win11 and Win 10 Fix

Hi guys.

I and stahlhart find a solution for steam version of the game. We create a patch to recover the 1.43.85 version. Just grab those files in the link and change in the folder of the game. Set win7 compatibility mode and thats it.

Here the Steps:

1 - Extract the folder
2 - Copy folder
3 - In library Steam search for the game and go in properties
4 - Navigate in game files
5 - Paste the copy folder
6 - Overwrite the files
7 - Run the game

Any luck with Dunes of War? I really want to play it again. I could play Fields of Glory but Dunes of War just runs in the background without displaying anything. Is there any fix or patch?

Not yet. There is a one-level demo that is a free download (you should be able to locate it with some Googling, it's about 300Mb) that is version 1.44.07 and will run on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Version 1.44.12, which is what the Steam version is, is where it broke. There is also a later repackaging from DreamCatcher called "First Battalion", that if I remember correctly is version 1.60, and it doesn't work either.

One thing that is interesting about the later versions of the game is that they have an engine that auto-scales the display to fill out completely -- I've not had any luck getting it to stay in 4:3 aspect ratio on modern 16:9 panels. It seems to override such settings in dgVoodoo. That may have something to do with what broke it after Windows 7, because later versions of Fields of Glory (First Battalion, again) exhibit the same behavior.

I look at it from time to time if I get suitably motivated, but my limited coding skills are not up to scratch for the job.

Hi. After the patch, the game at least started showing the opening video, but after the video with the logo hat, it immediately crashes. Any recommendations? Tried both on Win 10 and Win 11. I also tried the same parameters in dgVoodoo as yours, tried with compatibility mode too. Maybe I used wrong dll files from dgVoodoo?

Should be using the MS x86 ones -- also experiment with the graphics card emulation. the amount of VRAM, and the D3D version. Do you have Nvidia or AMD graphics?

I tested my only Windows 10 installation (also 22H2), and it is launching. I am having trouble now, however, with the other Windows 10 build here that I recently moved to Windows 11 24H2 -- this one now crashes with an access violation error (0xC0000005) if I launch it with dgVoodoo installed. If I remove the six dg files from the game's base directory, the game launches again, but then I lose the graphics improvements. My other Windows 11 build is 23H2, and the game is launching correctly there.

Also interesting is that now the game generates an "official" Zootfly crash dump when it crashes with dgVoodoo installed. The access violation error does not generate an 1000 event in the Windows event logging.

Just for grins, could you try temporarily removing the six dgVoodoo files (D3D8.dll, D3D9.dll, DDraw.dll, D3DImm.dll, dgVoodooCpl.exe, dgVoodoo.conf) from the game's base directory to see if the game launches? You don't have to delete these file, just temporarily move them out of the game's base directory.

I am using 2.78.2 of dgVoodoo here, by the way. Might have to try another version.

Man this game is a temperamental pain in the butt.

Arthur suggested leaving D3D9.dll out of the dgVoodoo installation -- this corrected problems on my 23H2 build, but dgVoodoo is still broken on 24H2.

I tried your version dgVoodoo2_78_2. It also doesn't work on my 22H2 laptop. I tried to completely delete dgVoodoo files from the folder, same crash. Two videos are running fine. After the video with the hat logo it freezes and after clicking the ZootBug error appears. I also tried to remove D3D9.dll, same crush... I tried different compotability mod too. Can`t check my Win11 23H2 for now with this suggetions, but I will try to do it when be at home.
The patch definitely at least allowed the videos to start, before even the application didn`t started, but something does not allow it to go further into the menu, and as I remember there was also a cinematic, but beyond the logo with the hat there is only a crash. It's really annoying that the game publishers can't optimize it for modern systems. But this is the game of my childhood, I’ve been wanting to finally play it for 15 years now or smth. When saw that someone created a patch I was really excited

Idk maybe you can copy/paste your game directory and upload it to google drive? Not sure if this wil help but who knows

One more thing to try: in the settings.db file, set "fullscreen" to 0.
